Bruce Kibondo writes what if the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) gave unemployed youths the first opportunity to apply for positions such as polling assistants, polling station staff, and other temporary election roles instead of primarily relying on civil servants?
Just imagine the impact.
Thousands of unemployed young people would earn an honest income, gain valuable work experience, and feel that they are active participants in building our democracy. For many, this could be their first opportunity to work in a professional environment.
Teachers, nurses, and other civil servants already have stable employment and a guaranteed monthly income. While they have every right to serve during elections, these temporary opportunities could be used more strategically to empower unemployed youths who are desperately searching for a chance to prove themselves.
Youth unemployment remains one of Zambia's biggest challenges. If elections can also create temporary employment for young people, then democracy should not only be about choosing leaders it should also be about creating opportunities for the citizens who need them most.
