I’ve been thinking a lot about the kind of society we are building.

Every child deserves protection.
Every young person deserves an opportunity.
Every person who has made a mistake deserves a chance to rebuild their life with dignity.

Real change is not achieved through words alone, it requires commitment, partnerships, and action.

Whether we are strengthening access to justice, supporting rehabilitation and reintegration, empowering communities through legal awareness, or protecting vulnerable children, every small step we take today shapes a safer and more just tomorrow.

As leaders, our responsibility goes beyond implementing projects…

…It is about restoring hope where it has been lost, giving a voice to the unheard, and ensuring that no one is left behind because of poverty, vulnerability, or circumstance.

The journey is not always easy, but every life transformed reminds us why we must keep going.

Together, let us build communities where justice is accessible, children are protected, families are strengthened, and second chances become pathways to lasting change.

Because when justice reaches everyone, hope rises for all.

As we commemorate Heroes Day, we honour the brave men and women whose courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment secured the freedom and future of our nation. Their legacy continues to inspire us to serve Zambia with integrity, compassion, and purpose.

At the Prisoners' Future Foundation, this year's Heroes Day holds special significance as we prepare to welcome home Mr. Geoffrey Mayamba, Zambia's first Laureate of the Marianne Initiative, whose exceptional leadership and dedication to justice have earned international recognition.

Through his participation in the Marianne Initiative and his representation of Zambia at the 9th World Congress Against the Death Penalty in Paris, France, he has proudly elevated both our nation and the Foundation on the global stage.

His journey reminds us that heroes are not only those remembered in our history books, but also those who dedicate their lives to advancing justice, restoring hope, and creating opportunities for the most vulnerable members of society.

On behalf of the Board, Management, Staff, Volunteers, and our valued partners, I wish all Zambians a peaceful, reflective, and inspiring Heroes Day. May we continue to draw strength from the sacrifices of our national heroes as we work together to build a Zambia founded on justice, dignity, and opportunity for all.

ZAMBIA AND PRISONERS' FUTURE FOUNDATION ON THE GLOBAL STAGE 🌍

We are proud to celebrate another significant milestone for Zambia and the Prisoners' Future Foundation as our Executive Director, Mr. Geoffrey Mayamba, participated in the 9th World Congress Against the Death Penalty held in Paris, France.

During the closing ceremony, Mr. Mayamba had the distinct honour of presenting an award to one of the Congress award recipients, recognizing outstanding contributions to the global movement towards the abolition of the death penalty and the promotion of human rights.

This moment is a testament to the growing recognition of Zambia's voice in international justice and human rights discussions. As Zambia's first Marianne Initiative Laureate, Mr. Mayamba continues to represent not only the Prisoners' Future Foundation but also the country's commitment to advancing access to justice, rehabilitation, reintegration, and the protection of human dignity.

His participation at this prestigious global congress reflects PFF's unwavering commitment to advocating for fair justice systems, promoting alternatives that uphold human rights, and contributing to international dialogue on criminal justice reform.

Every person deserves access to healthcare, proper nutrition, hygiene, and the opportunity to live with dignity regardless of their circumstances.

Since 2018, the Prisoners' Future Foundation (PFF) has partnered with the Zambia Correctional Service to improve the health and wellbeing of incarcerated persons across Zambia.

Through targeted interventions, we've contributed to reducing mortality, supporting critically ill inmates, assisting pregnant women, mothers, juveniles, and strengthening hygiene and disease prevention in correctional facilities.

I was honoured to have participated in a learning engagement on strengthening civil society engagement with international human rights mechanisms at the United Nations Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

This valuable experience provided deeper insights into the work of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the Human Rights Council, treaty bodies, special procedures, and mandate holders. I also had the privilege of interacting with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and learning more about how civil society organizations can effectively engage with international human rights systems.

The engagement explored key issues including the operation of treaty bodies and the Human Rights Council, strategies for meaningful civil society participation within United Nations mechanisms, and approaches for engaging Permanent Missions to advance human rights advocacy and accountability.

As Executive Director of the Prisoners' Future Foundation (PFF), I remain committed to applying the knowledge and skills gained to strengthen our work in promoting human rights, access to justice, prisoner rehabilitation, and meaningful civic participation in Zambia and beyond.

I extend my gratitude to the organizers, facilitators, and fellow participants for the enriching discussions and shared learning experiences. Together, we can continue advancing human dignity, justice, and respect for human rights for all.

REFLECTING ON AN INSPIRING EXPERIENCE IN BRUSSELS

Over the past few days, I had the privilege of participating in the Marianne Initiative 2026 Laureates Programme in Brussels, joining a remarkable group of leaders and human rights advocates from across the world.

The programme provided an invaluable opportunity to engage with representatives of European Union institutions, Members of the European Parliament, international development partners, and civil society organisations working to advance human rights, democracy, inclusion, and social justice.

The discussions, exchanges, and learning experiences reinforced the importance of global solidarity in addressing challenges facing vulnerable and marginalized communities.

I was particularly inspired by the commitment of diverse stakeholders to protecting human dignity, promoting fundamental freedoms, and strengthening democratic values.

Beyond the meetings and workshops, the experience allowed us to build meaningful connections, share experiences from our respective countries, and explore opportunities for future collaboration.

I return to Paris encouraged, inspired, and more committed than ever to advancing human rights, social justice, and inclusive development within our communities, back.

My sincere gratitude to the Marianne Initiative, the French Government, fellow laureates, and all the institutions and organisations that made this enriching experience possible.
