Access to justice should never depend on where someone is held
During the Judges’ Forum, Chief Justice Mumba Malila called for the formal integration of mobile courts into Zambia’s judicial system, emphasizing the need to include them in official court calendars and planning processes.
Through partnerships with the Embassy of Ireland, Irish Rule of Law International, the Judiciary of Zambia, the Legal Aid Board, and the Zambia Correctional Service, the mobile court initiative has already demonstrated its impact reducing delays, clearing case backlogs, and bringing justice closer to inmates in correctional facilities.
The pilot project covered nine correctional facilities across Lusaka, Central, and Copperbelt Provinces, improving access to justice and enabling many inmates to progress through the formal court system.
As the initiative moves from pilot to institutionalisation, stakeholders agree that mobile courts are a powerful tool for a more accessible, efficient, and humane justice system in Zambia.
