The Kabwe Youth Network was proudly represented at the 2026 Zambia Alternative Mining Indaba (ZAMI) by its Chairperson, Chipego Milumbe, and Vice Chairperson, Blessings Petemoya

Held under the theme “From Policy to Practice: Celebrating Value Addition and Community Resilience in Zambia’s Mining Sector,” the two-day Indaba brought together government representatives, civil society organizations, mining companies, traditional leaders, youth, and community members to discuss the future of Zambia’s mining sector.

Throughout the event, the Network’s representatives participated in exhibition sessions, interactive panel discussions, and stakeholder engagements focused on responsible mining, environmental sustainability, value addition, community resilience, and meaningful youth participation.

Their participation reflects the Kabwe Youth Network’s continued commitment to ensuring that young people’s voices are represented in national conversations that shape sustainable development and the future of mining communities.

Last week, four of our youths from the Kabwe Youth Network had the privilege of participating in the first-ever Central Provincial Alternative Mining Indaba (PAMI) to be held in Kabwe, under the theme, “From Broken Promises to Environmental Justice: Addressing Toxicity in Mining.”

Holding the Indaba in Kabwe was more than symbolic. As one of Zambia’s mining towns that has endured decades of environmental degradation and lead contamination, bringing this platform to the community signaled that the voices of affected residents deserve to be heard where the impact is greatest.

It created an important opportunity for communities, government institutions, civil society, and other stakeholders to confront longstanding challenges, strengthen accountability, and begin shaping practical solutions for a healthier and more just future.

As young environmental advocates, we left encouraged and even more committed to ensuring that these conversations lead to measurable action. Real change for Kabwe will not come from promises alone, but from sustained accountability, community participation, and collective commitment to environmental justice.
