ZUNMO COMMENDS GOVERNMENT ON CONTINUED HEALTH WORKER RECRUITMENT
The Zambia Union of Nurses and Midwives Organisation (ZUNMO) has welcomed Government's commitment to recruit more than 2,000 health workers through a transparent, merit-based and accountable process.
ZUNMO President Fray Michelo in a media statement issued on 22 July, 2026, commended Government for maintaining annual health worker recruitment despite prevailing fiscal constraints. He said this continued investment demonstrates recognition that quality healthcare depends on an adequate, motivated and equitably distributed health workforce.
The ZUNMO President further calls for:
✅ Increased allocation of positions to nurses and midwives, who form the backbone of healthcare delivery.
✅ Publication of clear recruitment criteria, timelines and distribution of positions by profession and location.
✅ Fair consideration for qualified nurses and midwives who have remained unemployed for several years.
✅ Prioritisation of rural and underserved health facilities and provision of retention incentives.
✅ Sustained annual recruitment and expansion of the health workforce to meet growing healthcare demands.
He stated that every nurse or midwife employed represents improved maternal care, timely treatment for patients and stronger health systems for the communities.
Mr. Michelo added that ZUNMO remains ready to work with Government and the Ministry of Health to strengthen workforce planning and ensure that these appointments benefit all Zambians.
