In a significant step towards promoting justice and support for vulnerable members of society, the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) has launched legal desks aimed at providing information, referral, and mediation services. The inauguration ceremony, held at the YWCA office in Central Province, Chibombo District, marked a collaborative effort between the organization and the Federal Government of the Republic of Germany, co-financed by the European Union.
The event witnessed the presence of esteemed dignitaries, including the District Administration Officer, Mr. Mazuba, who conveyed a speech on behalf of the District Commissioner, emphasizing the crucial role of the legal desks in ensuring access to justice for all, particularly women, children, and people with disabilities. He highlighted the YWCA's longstanding commitment to supporting survivors of gender-based violence and underlined the importance of extending legal support to address a spectrum of community issues.
Religious leader Pastor Marrien Chisamba Mwale echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the urgency of promoting lawful conflict resolution mechanisms. He expressed concern over the rising trend of individuals resorting to vigilantism or enduring lives of suffering due to unresolved legal matters. Pastor Mwale commended the YWCA's initiative and underscored the organization's motto of "Love Serve One Another," highlighting their readiness to offer counselling services to those in need.
The launch event served as a rallying call for community support and engagement in the implementation of the project. Attendees were urged to embrace the legal desks as a resource for resolving conflicts peacefully and seeking redress for grievances. The collaboration with international partners signalled a commitment to holistic approaches to justice and social welfare.
