Frida Hartley Shelter for Homeless women and children

Frida Hartley Shelter for Homeless women and children Our aim is consistent with the values of our late president Utata Nelson Mandela when he said: Free The older children attend the neighboring schools.

In 1922 a ealthy socialite namely Frida Hartley gave up her comfortable life in London and headed to Johannesburg, where she opened a shelter for destitute women, a solid one-storey brick building in Bellevue. One hundred years later the Frida Hartley Shelter is still solid, standing in a quiet, jacaranda-lined street of modest houses and small blocks of flats. And its doors are still open to penn

iless and abandoned women, some of them pregnant, and their children. Frida Hartley shelter has since become a safe-haven for abused and vulnerable women and children, as well as young teenage girls. The ladies and young girls that come to the house have all been the victims of abuse and violence, such as suffering sexual trauma, domestic violence, etc. These ladies all have one desire and that is to regain their dignity in the community and live a normal life. Frida Hartley shelter ensures that the ladies regain their human dignity and self-worth. We can accommodate mothers together with their children, thereby keeping the family together as a unit. The services we offer include but not limited to counseling, therapy, life skills, work skills etc, thus eventually enabling them to fend for themselves and their children. Frida Hartley offers long term accommodation ranging from 3 months up to 12 months. During their stay at FHS the ladies are assisted to find employment and helped with financial management so they can handle their salaries better. Once they have saved up enough money to find accommodation of their own they leave our premises having become productive members of the community. FHS offers an in house crèche for the smaller children, this enable the mothers to have a safe place to keep their kids while they attend training and or seek employment. Specific programmes that are presented include: Spiritual counseling; Life Coaching – Inner Life Skills and Group Therapy; Trauma Debriefing; Skills development classes, work skills ( how to dress for success), financial management, basic computer training, catering management etc

We are able to accommodate a proximally 20 women and their children and (presently we have 15 women and 14 children- ages between 2 weeks -6 years). Our success rate is 88%, with heart warming stories of women who have really transformed their lives and lives of their children. It is such a joy to witness these women finding employment and regaining their self esteem. It is our mission to Add value and provide a quality services in the community. Without the assistance of community minded individuals just like you, we wouldn’t be able to serve those in our community. Thank you for even considering our organisation.

In the spirit of Mandela Day and Nelson Mandela's belief that real change is built through small acts of kindness, we're challenging you to make a difference.

This Mandela Month, we are asking you donate R67 or more to help keep our doors open for vulnerable women and children.
As shelters across the country face growing funding challenges, just R67 can help ensure that women and children in crisis continue to access safety, shelter, meals, and support services.

Every contribution, no matter the size, helps create hope and opportunity.

How to participate throughout the month of July:
💙 Donate R67 or more via EFT or visit the shelter and swipe at our Speedpoint.
💙 Challenge 6 friends, family members, or colleagues to do the same.
💙 Visit us and take a selfie with our Champions Frame.

Together, our small acts of kindness can create lasting change.

Winter Wellness Covered at FHS ❄️💙

Winter can be especially challenging for the women and children in our care, and when we recently experienced a flu outbreak at the shelter, we had to temporarily limit visitors while focusing on the health and recovery of our residents.

Luckily for us, our strategic partners at the Dis-Chem Foundation Dis-Chem Pharmacies who are our long-standing provider of essential toiletries and general OTC medication, came to the rescue. When we needed help sooner than expected last month, we reached out to the team and they were quick to assist, allowing us to collect our monthly supplies early, including much-needed flu medication and winter health essentials for the women and children.

We have to express our gratitude to the team for their reliability and continued support. Thank you for supporting our women's health and wellness. 💙

That's Chef D to you.

Two years ago, we were celebrating her matriculation. Today, we are celebrating another incredible milestone as she is about to complete her studies at the International Hotel School and her Work Intergrated Leadership with Radisson Hotels .

Over the past two years, she has grown into a talented young chef, catering for many of our events - from intimate gatherings of 30–50 guests to large-scale functions serving over 400 people. Her dedication, hard work, and passion for the culinary arts continue to inspire and feed us😉.

We are so proud to be part of her journey and excited to see what the future holds.

Looking for catering for your next corporate event, meeting, or special occasion? You can book our talented young chef. For enquiries and her contact details, please email [email protected].

Friends and long-term partners of FHS, St. Columba's Presbyterian Church
, recently stopped by to visit the shelter and, as always, they did not come empty-handed.

Just in time for winter, they donated blankets to help keep our residents warm during the colder months. They also took the time to check in on our current activities and needs of the women and children we serve.

Thank you, , for your years of partnership, support, and continued trust in the work we do. We are forever grateful to have you walking this journey with us

❄️ A chilly 12°C giving back Friday this morning.

The colder months are the most difficult for the people we serve. Every week, many ask us, "Will you be serving again next Friday?" We are grateful that, thanks to the support of our donors, our answer continues to be: yes, yes, and yes!

Each Friday, our soup kitchen provides a hot meal to an average of 450–550 people, offering not only nourishment but also comfort and consistency during challenging times.

A heartfelt thank you to our team, volunteers, and strategic partner who make this outreach programme possible week after week. Your support helps ensure that no one in our community faces winter alone.

Until next

Its at FHS and there are 31 Fridays left of 2026!

Thank you to the McCain SA team for joining us today, volunteering their time, helping serve meals, and spending the afternoon with our community. We appreciate the support and willingness to be part of today’s session.

A big thank you to our regular degulars(the team, our community volunteers and internal ladies) for keeping everything running smoothly from start to finish 🙌🏽

Fridays are our reminder of how much can be done when people come together with a shared purpose. Thank you to everyone who played a part in today’s soup kitchen.

🎓 Graduation Season at FHS , and we never miss a year! ✨

A little back story...Bongi arrived at with her matric certificate and the determination to build a better future for herself. During her time with us, she embraced every opportunity that came her way with resilience and commitment.

Through the support of our strategic partners, she secured employment, moved into her own place, and continued pursuing her qualification in Insurance.

Last week, we got the invite… our girl was walking across the graduation stage - the first in her family to do so -and wanted to share the moment with us. 🥹🎉

Please help us celebrate Bongi! And don’t be surprised if you see her here again soon… she’s already working towards her full degree in Insurance. 👏🏽

🎙️ IN CONVERSATION | PUSHING BOUNDARIES ✨
Our Centre Operations Manager joined the, Margins Pushing Boundaries sharing more about the work we do, the realities facing vulnerable women and children in our communities, and why dignity, safety, and long-term empowerment of women, matters now more than ever.

The discussion touched on gender-based violence, poverty, homelessness, and the urgent need for holistic support systems that help women rebuild their lives with dignity and independence.

Thank you to the Margins team for creating spaces for meaningful dialogue and for highlighting the work being done on the frontlines of social change.
Together, we keep pushing boundaries.
