My SPAR Pick n Pay Checkers WOOLWORTHS

Sometimes the best environmental innovation isn’t a new material. It’s remembering what people used before plastic existed.

The viral images came from Rimping Supermarket in Chiang Mai, Thailand, where fresh vegetables were bundled in banana leaves and secured with flexible bamboo or fibre ties. The approach significantly reduced the amount of disposable plastic needed for packaging, although small amounts of plastic were still used for some labels.

Banana leaves have been used to wrap and cook food across Asia for generations. They’re large, flexible, naturally water-resistant and biodegradable, making them particularly practical in tropical regions where banana plants are abundant.

What made this interesting wasn’t the invention of something new. It was taking an old, incredibly simple idea and putting it inside a modern supermarket.

The photos quickly spread around the world, and similar banana-leaf packaging was also trialled by supermarkets elsewhere in Southeast Asia.

It won’t replace every kind of plastic packaging, especially where banana leaves aren’t locally available. But it demonstrates something important: not every environmental problem needs a futuristic solution.

Sometimes the sustainable technology we’ve been searching for has been growing on trees the entire time.

Critically acclaimed film Out of Mined is coming to Die Koelkamers in Paternoster!

Our tickets are booked, are yours?

🎥 DIE KOELKAMERS BIOSCOPE presents
outofmined.documentary Out of Mined (63 minutes)
Produced by Eyeforce
In association with Protect the West Coast on Saturday 22 August

Director: Arthur Neumeier

South Africa’s West Coast, raw, fragile, and rich in life is facing a quiet catastrophe. Far from the public eye, diamond and mineral mining are tearing apart its beaches, dunes, and ocean floor.

Out of Mined is a feature documentary shining a light on this devastation and on the people fighting to protect what remains.

Through the voices of local communities, scientists, environmentalists, and indigenous leaders, the film reveals what’s been lost and what can still be saved.

More than a story of destruction, it’s one of resilience and hope. Calling for change, reflection, and a shift in how we value the land, the ocean, and the diamonds we buy as symbols of love.
