We had our general meeting on the 8th October, where we celebrated our 96th birthday.
In honour of October being Breast Cancer Awareness month, Elsabe Coetzee shared with us her battle with breast cancer, encouraging us all to go for our regular check ups, do self inspection and endure the mammogram procedure. Early detection can save your life.
October is also ADHD Awareness month. And the 8th October was World Sight Day, World Dyslexia Day and World Octopus Day!

Our Arts and Crafts meeting was held in Kanoneiland on the 17th Sept, hosted by Elize De Jager (Pretorius). Ds Kirsten Small opened with scripture from 1 Cor 12 Vs 4-6 followed by
Elize De Jager (snr) who gave feedback from the recent Congress.
Many of us wore something in honour of Heritage month. Heritage Day is celebrated annually on the 24th September. Eirene gave each member a packet of maize porridge. "Maize is firmly established as South Africa's primary heritage and dietary staple".
Elsabe shared a recipe from RSG on koesisters (not to be mistaken for koeksisters). And Eirene read a short, uplifting Heritage Day story called The Spice of the street.

Keep in mind: the Upington Nursery (next to Waterwese) is allowing each person 2 free trees in September month. Which is perfect for Arbour Day that takes place annually from 1 - 7 September.
Elize De Jager (Pretorius) showed us how to do art scraping and creating abstract art in this manner. She also showed us what she made out of resin. We enjoyed traditional pancakes with coffee and tea after the meeting.

With regards to Dr Ivan Meyer (Minister of Agriculture, Economic Development and Tourism, in the Western Cape) who has presented a challenge to all members of the CWAA to be apart of the "VLV-GROEN SPAN", and to plant a tree. I think we covered all angles on Wednesday, 16th Sept. Our theme being "Our strength lies in teamwork" - the Upington High School Landbou students, along with Mrs Botes (she teaches Landbou Bestuurs Praktyk) worked together as a team and planted the tree.
Our project being: from garden to table - we therefore sponsored an orange fruit tree. Upington High School's motto is: A good tree bears good fruit. So it all works out so well.

We thank Mrs Botes and Upington High School for granting us the opportunity to plant a tree close to their netball courts and for sharing the joy of future shade and fruit with the many generations of athletes and students who pass by.

On the 13th August our convenor for Public Affairs, Christa Botha, hosted her meeting at Pepsico. Pepsico operates a major vine fruit and raisin processing facility in Upington (their legacy as Pioneer Foods/SAD site), serving as SA's largest raisin packer. Their main function is the processing of vine fruit and raisin packing, such as currants, sultanas and Flame seedless Crimson. They procure a large portion of SA's regional grape and raisin crop, with a focus on expanding healthy snacking value chains and local agricultural investments.

Eirene Hoving gave a short presentation about the function of herbs within the concept of "Garden to Table" (Tuin tot Tafel). Bringing attention to what the benefits of each herb entails. It takes us back to a time before doctors and modern medicine, when women would look to the fields and mountains for healing plants. Steep the leaves and flowers in boiling water and drink it as a tea to soothe and cure ailments. Those days the women were accused of being witches. Thankfully today we can sip on our cup of rooibos or chamomile tea and embrace our inner witch. 🤣

On the 11th June, it was our Lifestyle meeting, hosted by Rina Brink at Blikemmer. Rina collected all the knitted teddies from our members who participated in her charity project. Gloudine impressively knitted a total of 26 teddies. And then Rina proceeded to show us how to sew, by hand, material flowers. These cute floral decorations can be used to dolly-up a blanket, bag, hair-band, clothes etc etc. Rina's guest speaker was Elseby Viljoen (owner of Blikemmer) who enlightened us with her current charity projects, most of which relates to Upington FURever Rescue, Foster & Adoption and she gave us some insight into various kinds of wool and material (along with great hints and ideas for the making of aprons).

On the 8th May, we had our Agriculture & Horticulture meeting, hosted by convenor Eirene Hoving at her home. The topic was that of Recycling (with a Greek flare). Eirene's father is a Greek, from the island of Lesvos, in Greece. She therefore shared with us the devastation of the aftermath left on the coastline of the island, as a result of the refugees fleeing from the Middle East, seeking asylum (via Turkey) in Lesvos (their passage to Europe) since 2015. They arrived in hundreds and thousands every day, risking their lives on dinghys, wearing lifejackets and rubber tubes. And then discarding the dinghys, lifejackets and tubes on the shores of the islands. The Greeks swept it all up, in their daily clean up of the beaches, where it later piled up into heaps and heaps of the refuse. The Greeks became resourceful and from the refuse, they repurposed all the rubber and lifejackets into backpacks, toiletry bags, pencil bags and jewelry, therefore creating jobs and selling the products online, creating an income.
In the same way, Hellas Kalahari Containers, takes shipping containers and converts them into offices, storage units, ablution blocks, kitchens, sleeping quarters, spaza shops etc. They customize it according to the clients wishes. Charlene Hammond presented the members with a presentation of the container conversions and showed us how they build low-cost housing using mirror panels (which have been discarded by the solar farms). The mirror panels are insulated, and therefore are a great source for erecting homes.

Christene Maritz, from Upington Furever Rescue, Foster & Adoptions also addressed us about what they do with regards to rescuing, rehabilitating, rehoming and fostering dogs and cats and what the adoption process entails. Members from our group donated dog and cat food towards this charity.

And on that note, since we started the meeting with a glimpse of environmental affairs in Greece, it was only fitting to end the meeting in true Greek style, with dancing to Zorba the Greek and breaking plates, feasting on homemade moussaka. Spanakorizo soup, loukoumi, kourabiedes and ouzo (traditional Greek food, drink and treats).

Our CWAA Health meeting held on the 9th April, at the Salpura Salt factory. Magda Le Roux opened our meeting with scripture of "You are the salt of the earth": which is a famous quote from Jesus in Matthew 5:13 (NIV) during the Sermon on the Mount, where he tells his followers to positively influence the world. The verse highlights the need to maintain faith and positive action, warning that losing one’s "saltiness" makes one ineffective. It was so special how this beautiful verse connects so well with what we were taught that afternoon.
Salpura is one of the Donald Brown Group of Companies, which has been at the heart of producing the salt that helps feed families and provide safe drinking water across SA. It was Founded in the early 1970's by Donald Brown. Adri Bekker was our guest speaker from Salpura, and guided as through an informative and interesting presentation about Salpura and the health benefits of salt.
