A R20 Shades Day stickers contributes to the provision of white canes and white cane training to individuals such Kayla, who was trained by an SA Guide-Dogs Association, O&M Practitioner.
Kayla uses her platforms to educate the public about visual impairment by sharing the everyday experiences many sighted people rarely think twice about — navigating a busy university campus, using a white cane, shopping for clothes, choosing what to wear and moving through spaces not necessarily designed with her in mind.
By bringing these experiences into the conversation, she offers sighted audiences a glimpse into a world they may never have had reason to consider, helping to bridge the gap in awareness and understanding.
And for other visually impaired people, her message is: you can still live, explore, study, express yourself, have fun and be yourself.
That is the spirit Kayla brought with her when she joined us for Shades Day.
Thank you to our partner bigbluesouthafrica for sponsoring this styling session and sunglasses to Kayla.
[VD: in this video, we follow Kayla, dressed in a funky white dress with honey blonde braids, to get styled by a Shades Day partner at a nearby mall. Upon arrival at Big Blue, Queen, our Orientation & Mobility practitioner, describes the clothes and a Big Blue staff member describes different sunglasses. Kayla explores her options, chooses her favourite pair, styles her shades and has fun expressing her personal style.]
