There are 50 billion birds and about 40 trillion fish, yet only 8 billion humans. Birds succeed everywhere; fish thrive without shortage. But only about 25% of people live comfortably, while the rest struggle. With so much abundance, why do so many go without?

The answer lies in how humans spend their time. We often pursue activities for which we are not purposed, competing in domains where we have little advantage. The “lions” among us become domesticated dogs, the “eagles” are confined to a poultry house, and the chickens attempt to fly at high altitude. In short, we squander potential by operating outside our true purpose.

Purpose itself doesn’t require money; money tends to chase purpose. If you don’t yet know yours, invest what you can, time, reflection, and experimentation, in identifying it. That discovery is your best catalyst for lasting success.

ST Marks International School Staff members recently participated in a SANCA training workshop for teachers focused on two critical areas: understanding substance abuse and building better student support systems.

The workshop served as a reminder that teachers often serve as both the first line of defense and the first line of care. When educators understand the signs, triggers, and impact of substance use, they are better positioned to intervene early and connect students to the appropriate support before challenges escalate.

Key takeaways included:
1. Knowledge reduces stigma – A basic understanding of substance abuse helps shift conversations from punishment to support.
2. Early support changes – Small, consistent interventions at the school level can prevent long-term harm.
3. Teachers need tools, not just theory – Practical frameworks for identifying risk and navigating difficult conversations make a tangible difference in the classroom.

Appreciation was extended to SANCA for facilitating a practical, focused session, and to the educators who attended with a clear commitment to doing more for their students.

The message was clear: if healthier youth outcomes are the goal, equipping the adults around them is essential.
