"Myth : There are enough beds in shelters

Fact: A recent study by U-Turn Homeless Ministries, Khulisa Streetscapes, and MES, called The Cost of Homelessness in Cape Town, found that there are 14357 homeless people in Cape Town.

The Western Cape Government's Department of Social Development funds 1499 shelter beds in Cape Town, with another 1000 being added this year.

So what about the other 12000+ people who need help?

Giving to homeless people keeps them on the streets

Fact:
In an ideal world there would be enough facilities to which the public can donate that support the immediate needs of the homeless community while also helping them to take the next steps to get their lives back on track. Unfortunately there are over 14 000 homeless people in greater Cape Town and there simply are not enough shelters and feeding schemes to assist them all. Food and warm clothing are essentials for life and also basic human rights. Until there are enough facilities to assist our ENTIRE homeless community, denying people short-term assistance through food and clothing donations condemns them to hunger or having to face the elements without protection – both of which can be fatal. A nomination committee was established to evaluate and examine the skills and characteristics required of candidates to replace the two board members compelled by the adversity of not having a functional office space to vacate their seats.

If you are interested in joining our organization as part of the management team when we again have an office space with utilities, please let us know. Selected candidates will be invited to join the board.

Although we are not currently actively engaged in planning and executing any fundraising efforts or projects, we do still accept donations., so please support our long-term endeavors to again help the most vulnerable in our community at some point in the future. We do not receive any grants from the government.

We are happy to announce that our suspended email hosting service has been restored. Our email addresses are back online and functioning again.


We entered into negotiations with other local authorities that are bearing fruit and we hope to have our electricity supply and ability to effectively serve the most disadvantaged in our community restored sooner rather than later. Please consider supporting us with a donation until we can have our fundraising activities managed effectively. At that point volunteering your time would be an option to choose if you would like to support our cause without giving money.

Please take notice of the fact that most of our charitable activities are suspended for an indeterminate time period. This interruption of service to our community members came about through no fault of our own.

Because of the measures taken in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and also a number of arbitrary administrative decisions against our organisation by an interloping third party, the water and electricity supply to our office space was discontinued without notice or providing a lawful reason.
The Association of Religious Culture subsequently submitted a request for reasons in terms of the Promotion of Administrative Justice Act or "PAJA". However due to the Disaster Management Act regulations and lockdown measures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the time period for Judicial review of the adverse decision was extended to an indeterminate future date.

We apologise for any inconvenience this causes. Our website and emails are additionally not available because of the negative impact of the arbitrary actions against us.

We will be able to start raising funds and provide a service to the poor and needy in our community again as soon as we have a legal remedy and our utilities are restored.
In the meantime, we welcome any donations to help us survive.
