Wound washing saves lives!

If bitten by a dog ๐Ÿถ, always seek immediate medical advice.

The wound must be immediately and thoroughly washed for at least 15 minutes with soap and water. Then visit a clinic, as you may need post-exposure vaccination!

Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) are a group of diseases that disproportionately affect people from lower income countries due to limited access to essential services. Rabies is an example of an NTD of public health importance in South Africa and the Eastern Cape. It therefore remains important for a multi stakeholder approach to the prevention and control of this vaccine preventable disease. We as SAVA-CVC remain committed to the promotion of sustainable collaboration with all the relevant stakeholders.

Having access to globally recognised data collection, management and analysis tools has enabled us to improve our ability to use our data to learn and adapt our project approach. It has also made it easier to remain accountable to the various stakeholders we collaborate with.

As the year comes to a close, the Eastern Cape Rabies Project had an end of the year workshop to reflect on the successes, challenges and opportunities we experienced in 2025.
We were privileged to have our Director, Ms Claudia Cloete join us in reflecting on the year that is ending and planning ahead for the new year.
We at SAVA-CVC pride ourselves in the excellence our AHTs bring into their daily work. We were excited to celebrate the strengths of our AHTs with hard earned awards.

While we are taking a break to enjoy the festive season with our loved ones stay tuned to our socials for tips on how to protect yourselves, your pets and livestock safe from potential rabies exposures.

We commemorate One Health day on the 3rd November
One health is an approach that prioritises the health of humans, animals and the environment by encouraging multidisciplinary collaboration.
The rabies work in the Eastern Cape makes use of the One Health approach in our private-public partnership with health, state veterinary and environmental officials.
On One Health Day 2025 we wish to acknowledge all the dedicated officials from the department of health and department of agriculture who champion the One Health agenda with us. Together we ensure sustainable solutions to public health issues like rabies

Looking back on the amazing events we participated in over September, we at SAVA-CVC feel a great sense of gratitude for the rabies prevention community we are part of in the Eastern Cape.
We contributed to rabies events in Gucwa, Bizana, Gqeberha and Cala. Thank you to our partners from the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Health, and other NGOs.

Thank you to Nzo FM "Offical Site" for sharing their platform with us so we can spread the message of rabies control and prevention with the valued citizens of Alfred Nzo district.
Raising awareness on what rabies is, how it is transmitted, the clinical signs in humans and animals, what to do when you suspect an animal in your community has rabies and how to manage an animal bite in humans is how we can protect our communities and our livestock.
As Rabies Month comes to a close, we recognise community-based radio stations for the vital role they play in keeping our people informed and engaged on important public health issues.
