Kwazulu-Natal Society for the Blind Enhancing the quality of life for blind or partial sighted people, their families and other types of disabilities of KwaZulu-Natal Province / South Africa

The Kwazulu-Natal Society for the Blind (KZN - SB) was established in 1919 and has evolved into a dynamic organization offering multi-disciplinary approach to access to human rights related services for blind and partial sighted people of KwaZulu-Natal Province. The organization prides itself of successful service delivery focusing on the following services:

a) Early Childhood Development,
b) Ski

lls development - computer training, Braille training and cane production training,
c) Orientation and mobility (navigation skills using a white cane),
d) Providing Optometric clinic, in partnership with Brian Holdings,
e) Providing residence for the blind and partial sighted people,
f) Ensuring access to quality rehabilitation services for the blind and partial sighted people,
g) Economic Empowerment and business development skills. In 2013, the organization was awarded ‘Proudly South African’ status and its BBBEEE rating is Level 4. The organisation recently received a certificate of appreciation from the eThekwini Municipality during their August 2016 Living Legends Award.

Countdown to the 2025 South African Disability-20 Conference!

In just a few days, leaders, advocates, entrepreneurs, and changemakers from across Africa and around the world will gather at the Indaba Hotel in Johannesburg for the historic 2025 South African Disability-20 (D20) Conference, taking place from 16-17 November 2025 under the theme:

“Solidarity, Equality, and Disability-Inclusive Sustainable Development.”

As Chairperson of the Conference Steering Committee, Dr. Ashley Subbiah, SANCB’s Assistive Technology Centre Manager shared:

“I am honoured to welcome this historic event, the first Disability-20 Conference to coincide with a G20 Presidency on African soil. This platform brings together organisations of persons with disabilities, government representatives, development partners, and allies to reaffirm that disability inclusion is integral to global development, equity, and justice.

Through dialogue, collaboration, and the adoption of the Disability-20 South Africa Call to Action, we aim to amplify the voices and leadership of persons with disabilities in shaping policy and driving inclusive progress. Together, let us stand for solidarity, equality, and sustainability, ensuring that inclusion is not a promise deferred, but a lived reality.”

About the D20 South Africa Conference:
The D20 Conference is a groundbreaking platform aligned with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) and the African Disability Protocol (ADP).

It will serve as a powerful space for persons with disabilities and their organisations to influence policy, share innovations, and strengthen partnerships for a more inclusive global economy.

This year’s conference will feature:

■ Cultural showcases and storytelling sessions
■ Ministerial dialogues and a high-level roundtable

The KZN Society for the Blind donated a wheelchair to a male patient from Umlazi clinic Ekuphileni. Wheelchairs are more than just mobility aids. They represent freedom and independence.

A Vision for Change: Eye Assessment Initiative in Mtubatuba.

The KZN Society for the Blind in partnership with the Sabelo Nyawo Foundation hosted the eye assessment initiative at Mthulasizwe High School.

This initiative aimed to raise awareness about the importance of regular eye checkups. We also want to improve learners’ academic performance. The event brought together several local schools:

Participating Schools

-Mthulasizwe high school

-Siyakhanya primary school

- Fukula primary school

-Injojo primary school

The primary goal was to conduct eye tests for students, identifying those who may need corrective lenses. Several teachers also took part in the assessments, recognizing that good vision plays a critical role in effective teaching.

The KZN Society for the Blind offered generous support by pledging to donate glasses to any student identified as needing them.This initiative was not just about testing; it was about ensuring that every child has the tools to succeed in their education.

This initiative not only provided necessary medical services but also reinforced the idea that eye health is crucial for everyone. Together we are creating a brighter future for our community.

Hand over of Eye glasses : UMkhanyakude District Municipality - Manyiseni and Sizabantu Special School.

On the 10th of September 2025, the KZN Society for the Blind made a significant impact at UMkhanyakude District Municipality, by generously donating 40 pairs of eyeglasses for learners.

This initiative aims to enhance vision and improve the quality of life for learners who struggle with sight issues.

By providing these eye glasses, the KZN Society for the Blind not only helped learners see the world more clearly but also empowered them to pursue their education and daily activities with renewed confidence.

“Defending Our Human Rights, Protect Our Skin and Preserving Our Dignity”.

In South Africa September is recognized as Albinism Awareness Month, dedicated to raise awareness about albinism and addressing the challenges faced by individuals with this condition.

Significance of Albinism Awareness MonthAlbinism awareness aims to educate the public about albinism, a genetic condition characterized by a lack of melanin, which affects the color of skin, hair and eyes.

This month is crucial for promoting understanding , combating stigma and advocating for the rights of individuals with albinism. People with Albinism are not cursed, less intelligent or possess magical properties.

On the 27th of August 2025, the KZN Society for the Blind made a significant impact at Harry District Municipality, Mzimkhulu by generously donating 40 pairs of eyeglasses for learners and community members.

This initiative aims to enhance vision and improve the quality of life for community members and learners who struggle with sight issues.

Immediate release: 27 August 2025Announcement: Retirement of Teboho Tebza Moloisane as playerDear KZN Society for the Blind & Umbilo Giant Killers blind cricket club members and partners.

It is with a mix of sadness and appreciation that we announce the retirement of our esteemed captain Teboho Tebza Moloisane as a player.

After a thoroughly discussion with the club's executive committee Tebza informed us of his decision to retire as a player, citing personal and sensitive reasons that he prefers not to disclose.While this news comes as a shock, especially while the team is preparing for the upcoming T20 Blind Cricket Heritage Cup in September.

We understand and respect his decision. Tebza has assured us that he will continue to contribute to the club in other capacities and we are grateful for his ongoing commitment.

Teboho's leadership, dedication and skills have been instrumental in the club's numerous achievements, including:- Champions of Sport Day 2023 (Bulwa) Runners-up, T20 Blind Cricket Heritage Cup (September 2023 and 2024)- Winners, Human Rights T20 Blind Cricket Cup (March 2024)- Winners, Bureau Veritas T20 Blind Cricket Cup (2025)

The KZN Society for the Blind and Umbilo Giant Killers blind cricket club would like to appreciate Teboho’s invaluable contributions to the club and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.
