WE ARE STILL HERE. WE ARE STILL HELPING.
Since the devastating fire in Imizamo Yethu, Thula Thula has been on the ground, working alongside the affected families and seeing first-hand just how much has been lost.
The final numbers are heartbreaking:
* 62 structures destroyed
* 125 families affected
* 248 people impacted
* 59 school-going children
Behind every number is a person, a family, a home and a story.
And now, as the immediate devastation settles, the reality of what these families need becomes even clearer.
We urgently need school clothing and school essentials for the 59 children, including uniforms, shoes, stationery and school bags — because despite losing their homes, these children still need to get up and go to school.
We are also continuing to appeal for donations of clothing, blankets, bedding, toiletries, non-perishable food, household essentials and other items that can help families begin putting their lives back together.

🚨🔥 URGENT IY FIRE RELIEF APPEAL 🔥🚨

A devastating fire in the Petersen area of IY early this morning has tragically claimed lives and left more than 100 households in urgent need of assistance.

The Thula Thula Hout Bay team and volunteers are on site registering and assisting affected families.

We urgently need:

🥫 Non-perishable groceries
🛏️ Bedding and blankets
🧴 Toiletries
👶 Baby-care items

⚠ SCAM WARNING — Thula Thula Hout Bay

A scammer is impersonating Thula Thula Hout Bay on WhatsApp from the number 063 236 7720 (“~Thula thula hout bay”, signing off “Mrs MB”), asking for donations for fire-affected families in Imizamo Yethu and giving a NEDBANK account (126 181 3588) that DOES NOT belong to us.

We have opened a criminal case (Hout Bay SAPS CAS 18/08/2026) and reported the account and number. Please: do NOT pay anything to that account; block and report the number on WhatsApp; and share this warning.

If you have already paid: phone your own bank’s fraud line immediately and ask them to recall the payment, and open a case at your nearest SAPS, referencing Hout Bay CAS 18/08/2026.

All legitimate Thula Thula Hout Bay collections are announced only on our official channels. When in doubt, contact us directly before donating.

Urgent Donations Needed: Fire in Imizamo Yethu.

This morning at around 6:45am, a fire broke out in Madiba Square, Imizamo Yethu.

Impact so far:
- 47 structures affected
- About 60 families affected
- Registration is still ongoing as some families are at work

We will be at the Green Container, Thula Thula Hout Bay until 6pm this evening and tomorrow.

Update on the most recent fire relief activities.

As you may know, the past few weeks have been devastating for our community. 💔

On 24 February, over 220 families lost their homes.
And just as we were coming together to support them, tragedy struck again.

On 7 March, another fire tore through the Petersen area of Imizamo Yethu, destroying the homes of more than 180 families, leaving many with nothing but the clothes they were wearing.

In the face of so much loss, we have witnessed something incredibly powerful: community.

From donors and volunteers to local businesses and supporters both near and far, your kindness has brought relief, dignity, and hope to so many families during their darkest moments.

With your support, we have been able to facilitate and provide relief items to over 400 families in need, including mattresses, blankets, toiletries, groceries, clothing, and baby care packages.

Thank you for showing up. Thank you for caring. 🙏

We wish every affected family strength and comfort as they continue the long road of rebuilding their lives and homes after such heartbreaking loss.

🔥 Update Fire 7 March in Petersen, IY

Just as we were preparing to thank the incredible people who supported families affected by the 25 February fire, tragedy struck again.

On Saturday 7 March, a devastating fire swept through the Petersen area of Imizamo Yethu, leaving many families with nothing but the clothes they were wearing. 💔

Homes have been lost.
Belongings destroyed.
Families displaced.

Thula Thula Hout Bay is onsite in order to assess the impact and immediate needs, working closely with community leadership, City of Cape Town departments, and other NGOs to support those affected.

Dear Hout Bay Community and Beyond,

Our hearts are heavy yet filled with gratitude as we update you on the aftermath of the recent fire in our community.

So far, we’ve registered 224 families affected, including 176 informal homes and 5 formal homes.

Registration took place yesterday, with meals distributed to provide immediate relief.

Thula Thula will continue registering affected residents today as more residents come forward.

A massive thank you to our incredible donors—your generosity is truly amazing! From local retail partners and corporates to the Hout Bay community and supporters both local and international, your contributions are making a real difference in restoring hope.

We’re immensely grateful to City of Cape Town for their hard work and speedy mobilization in this crisis. And a special shoutout to Community Crime Prevention for partnering with us and providing a central 24/7 drop-off point—your support is invaluable!
