Update on the most recent fire relief activities.

As you may know, the past few weeks have been devastating for our community. 💔

On 24 February, over 220 families lost their homes.
And just as we were coming together to support them, tragedy struck again.

On 7 March, another fire tore through the Petersen area of Imizamo Yethu, destroying the homes of more than 180 families, leaving many with nothing but the clothes they were wearing.

In the face of so much loss, we have witnessed something incredibly powerful: community.

From donors and volunteers to local businesses and supporters both near and far, your kindness has brought relief, dignity, and hope to so many families during their darkest moments.

With your support, we have been able to facilitate and provide relief items to over 400 families in need, including mattresses, blankets, toiletries, groceries, clothing, and baby care packages.

Thank you for showing up. Thank you for caring. 🙏

We wish every affected family strength and comfort as they continue the long road of rebuilding their lives and homes after such heartbreaking loss.

🔥 Update Fire 7 March in Petersen, IY

Just as we were preparing to thank the incredible people who supported families affected by the 25 February fire, tragedy struck again.

On Saturday 7 March, a devastating fire swept through the Petersen area of Imizamo Yethu, leaving many families with nothing but the clothes they were wearing. 💔

Homes have been lost.
Belongings destroyed.
Families displaced.

Thula Thula Hout Bay is onsite in order to assess the impact and immediate needs, working closely with community leadership, City of Cape Town departments, and other NGOs to support those affected.

Dear Hout Bay Community and Beyond,

Our hearts are heavy yet filled with gratitude as we update you on the aftermath of the recent fire in our community.

So far, we’ve registered 224 families affected, including 176 informal homes and 5 formal homes.

Registration took place yesterday, with meals distributed to provide immediate relief.

Thula Thula will continue registering affected residents today as more residents come forward.

A massive thank you to our incredible donors—your generosity is truly amazing! From local retail partners and corporates to the Hout Bay community and supporters both local and international, your contributions are making a real difference in restoring hope.

We’re immensely grateful to City of Cape Town for their hard work and speedy mobilization in this crisis. And a special shoutout to Community Crime Prevention for partnering with us and providing a central 24/7 drop-off point—your support is invaluable!

🔥 IZIYAMI YETHU FIRE – UPDATE🔥

Following the devastating fire in Iziyami Yethu yesterday afternoon, the Thula Thula Hout Bay team was on site shortly after 7am this morning.

Fire & Rescue remained on scene as parts of the area were still smouldering. Today, residents have begun the heartbreaking process of clearing what remains of their homes — many having lost absolutely everything. ❤️‍🩹

Together with City of Cape Town Disaster Management, we have commenced the formal registration of those tragically affected. Early estimates indicate between 180 – 220 homes may have been destroyed. We will only be able to confirm the number of families and individuals requiring assistance once registration is complete.

For now, all efforts are focused on mobilising support and preparing for the significant assistance that will be required in the days and weeks ahead.
