Thyroid & Alzheimer’s: What’s the real link? 🧠🦋
I asked my doc about this after we started studying the nervous + endocrine system, and here’s the breakdown:
1. The link is real, but it’s not simple cause-and-effect
Thyroid issues don’t automatically mean Alzheimer’s. But they are connected.
2. Thyroid problems can mimic dementia
Memory issues, brain fog, slowed thinking, low mood. The good part: these often improve once your thyroid levels are corrected.
3. Both hypo and hyper thyroid mess with cognition
- Hypo: slow, foggy, tired brain
- Hyper: scattered, overdrive, anxious brain
4. Long-term untreated thyroid issues may increase dementia risk
It’s not a guarantee. That’s why doctors always check TSH, Free T4, Free T3 when someone has memory problems - it’s one of the reversible causes.
5. The BDNF connection
Thyroid hormones affect BDNF - aka “fertilizer for the brain.” BDNF helps neurons grow, form connections, and keep memory sharp. When thyroid is off, BDNF can drop, and that hits cognition.
6. Why this matters for Alzheimer’s
Alzheimer’s involves the brain shrinking and losing connections. Low BDNF makes that worse. That’s why endocrine docs push the basics so hard:
- Walk daily
- Sleep enough
- Learn new things
- Manage stress
Bottom line:
Feeling sorry for yourself won’t help. You need to be out there, moving, learning, living. If you have thyroid issues and notice memory changes, get it checked. It might be fixable, and even if it isn’t, catching it early helps.
