As a young girl, Bongekile Pozane loved the beautiful yellow mountain she could see from her home. It was where she learned to swim, where she went to find peace, and where she holds some of her most cherished childhood memories. Little did she know that the mountain was actually a toxic waste dump....

The Bench Marks Foundation (BMF) rejects xenophobia, hate speech, violence, and all attempts to scapegoat migrants and vulnerable communities for systemic social and economic failures. Grounded in the principles of social justice, human dignity, equality, and solidarity, BMF maintains that the root causes of poverty, unemployment, inequality, and exploitation lie in structural governance and economic failures not in the presence of foreign nationals.

BMF cautions against narratives perpetuated by sections of the mainstream media and public discourse that seek to divide poor and working-class communities while diverting attention from the real causes of socio-economic injustice. As an organisation committed to ethical accountability and community empowerment, BMF continues to advocate for peaceful coexistence, Pan-African solidarity, universal human rights, and collective accountability.

As BMF has consistently affirmed, “justice requires that we stand with those oppressed by poverty and exploitation and work to change the structures and policies that support their oppression.” Equally, “our empathy and solidarity cannot be conditional but universal,” particularly in the face of growing discrimination and violence against vulnerable communities.

Our work remains focused on advancing the rights, dignity, and wellbeing of all affected communities through constructive dialogue, social justice, and sustainable transformation.

Did you know South Africa has an estimated 6,100 abandoned mines?

When mines close without proper rehabilitation, communities can continue living with the impacts for decades. Environmental damage, health concerns, unsafe land, and economic uncertainty do not disappear when operations end.

Mine closure is not the end.

Read CER’s latest report, *No More Ghost Towns*, and learn more about mine closure in Mpumalanga and what meaningful accountability could look like.

Bambanani Steps Toward Accountability and Solutions.

Bambanani met with the Federation for Sustainable Development (FSE) and Pan African Resources Mine to discuss the scope of work for an upcoming project in schools.

The project will focus on awareness and education about the impacts of tailings to ensure that communities, especially young people, understand the dangers of toxic waste left behind by gold mining.

Our objectives are clear:
- Make corporations accountable for their impacts.
- Engage directly with communities to build knowledge and resilience.
- Take the first step toward solutions that mitigate the devastating legacy of gold mining.

For too long, our neighborhoods have been left with dust to inhale instead of streets paved with gold. This initiative marks the beginning of turning that injustice into action, awareness, and education.

Upcoming Webinar Alert!

After months of advocacy and demanding transparency, the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) has finally released its much-anticipated report on the Jagersfontein tailings disaster.

While the release is a win for civil society, the document itself is dense, technical, and high-stakes for the communities living near these sites.

Join the host, Tailings Civil Society Working Group, as they unpack what the DWS report reveals.

Read the official [DWS report](https://www.dws.gov.za/DSO/Documents/Jagersfontein%20Final%20Report.pdf) ahead of the session.

Let’s keep pushing for transparency, justice, and real change. ✊

Did you know?

In 2016, the Centre for Environmental Rights published Zero Hour — a report exposing systemic failures in the compliance monitoring and enforcement of mining licences in the Mpumalanga Highveld region.

The report documents the proliferation of prospecting and mining right applications, particularly for coal mining, occurring in Mpumalanga.

It also shows how the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) and the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) demonstrate persistent regulatory shortcomings and the high cost of this lack of governance for local communities and ecosystems.

Years later, many of these issues remain central to conversations on mining, environmental rights, and climate justice.

Do you have questions about mining governance, coal mining, environmental rights, or what this report means for communities?
