Every Wednesday evening, the battlefield shifts from the dining table to the chessboard.

Join us from 6PM to 9PM as The Smokey Brisket teams up with Helderberg Chess Club to host a relaxed, social, and completely free Chess Battle Night.

Whether you're a seasoned grandmaster, a weekend strategist, or someone who still calls every piece "the little guy," you'll find a seat at the table. New players are always welcome, and experienced players are happy to share tips, tactics, and a few hard-earned lessons from the battlefield.

Expect friendly competition, challenging matches, plenty of laughs, and the occasional dramatic checkmate.

Good day, everyone,

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Armand Etsebeth as our Regional Rating Officer.

For those who are not familiar with this role, Armand will be the sole point of contact for all tournament registrations with CHESSA and FIDE. All clubs, schools, organisers, and members are required to submit their tournament registration information directly to him, and he will manage the registration process through to completion.

Please note that each tournament registration will be accompanied by an invoice issued by CHESSA, not the Cape Town Chess Federation. Registration will only be finalised once proof of payment has been received.

We wish Armand every success in his new role and ask everyone to support him as we continue to improve and streamline our tournament registration process.

♟️ Proud moment for Helderberg Chess Club!

Two of our young stars, Ben Klopper and Isabella Temmers, recently represented South Africa at the 2026 African Youth Chess Championship in Uganda.

Competing against some of Africa's strongest junior players, Ben finished 18th out of 198 players in the U12 Open section, while Isabella placed an outstanding 13th out of 104 players in the U12 Girls section.

Their performances showcased determination, skill and the bright future of South African chess.

It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that the Cape Town Chess Federation shares the devastating news of the sudden passing of FIDE Master (FM) Dr. Shabier Bhawoodien today.

Dr. Shabier was not just an illustrious chess player; he was a giant of our community, a fierce competitor under the banner of SACOS, a dedicated mentor, and an unyielding advocate for non-racialism in sport. From being introduced to the game via radio during the 1972 Fischer-Spassky match to achieving legendary local and international triumphs - including his blitz victory over GM Miguel Najdorf in 1996 - Dr. Shabier leaves behind a monumental legacy that will inspire generations to come.

Our deepest condolences go out to his family, his son FIDE Master Mohamed Ozayr Bhawoodien, Manyanani Chess Club, and all who had the privilege of sharing a chessboard or a conversation with him.
