On 9 August 1956, over 20,000 women, domestic workers, factory workers, mothers, students, marched to the Union Buildings against the pass laws that tried to control their freedom. Led by Lilian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph, Rahima Moosa, and Sophia Williams-De Bruyn, they gave us the words we still carry: Wathint' abafazi, wathint' imbokodo, you strike a woman, you strike a rock.

That's the strength Matla Basadi is built on, the name itself means the power of women. Nearly 70 years later, our mission is to make sure that power reaches every young woman starting her career: through mentorship, skills, and spaces where she can rise without asking permission.

To every woman who marched so we could stand here, thank you. To every woman still rising, the power is yours. 💜
