ABOUT US:
Established in 2005, CURV is made up of a group of resident volunteers (ordinary people like you and me) with a common passion for the conservation and preservation of our indigenous fauna and flora. CURV is registered with Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and KZN Conservancies association. Alien invasive plant species are a living, growing threat to our natural assets and threaten our biodiversity
; our Conservancy and its volunteers are committed to eradicating these alien plant species from our natural areas, as well as educating local residents on the threat these plants impose, how to identify the numerous alien species and also the legislature surrounding harbouring these illegal plants on your private property. Simply put:
“Invasive alien species represent the second most significant cause of species extinction worldwide after habitat destruction,” states the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Invasive alien plants compete for the same resources and in many instances completely displace our indigenous plants. This in turn negatively affects animal communities who rely on indigenous vegetation for food and shelter. CONSERVATION PROJECT – GREEN OPEN SPACE IN NORTHDENE, QUEENSBURGH (KWA-ZULU NATAL)
CURV entered into an agreement with EThekwini Municipality to rehabilitate approximately 7 acres of green open space in Northdene, Queensburgh - these grounds were abandoned by previous land user years earlier and had become completely infested with alien invasive plant species; as the present custodians for these grounds, it is CURV’s responsibility to restore these grounds back to their original, natural state. Ensuring the grounds are free from alien invasive species is an ongoing project – CURV members & volunteers attend monthly work party “hack-attacks” to eradicate these alien plants. Become a volunteer / Donate herbicides, gardening tools & equipment / Donate funds – every buck counts!
