Around two years ago, we embarked on a journey to bring WUDC back to South Africa and, by extension, to the wider Pan-African community. Today, we celebrate the culmination of that dream and thank the global debate community for its support. We now set our sights on 2028 and begin preparations to welcome all debaters to Tshwane (after a short rest).

We would like to acknowledge the Brazil WUDC Bid team’s monumental effort and thank them for pushing us to engage more deeply with the community's needs. We wish them the very best.

Additionally, we would like to thank the CAs of our 2027 bid, Bea B. Legaspi, Boemo Delano Phirinyane and Kat Cheng, who formed the bedrock of the bid. Even though life and career demands mean they are no longer on this journey, we could not have done this without them.

We are also grateful to our current CA and TAB team, Klaudia Maciejewska, Matthew Toomey, Mubarrat Wassey, Maison Pieterson Maphosa and Simran Makwane for their continued work to make debating excellent and accessible.

To our advisors, thank you for your tireless efforts in shaping our policies and guiding our hand. To everyone who advocated for our bid, we are eternally grateful.

To the global debate community, we know we have been reaching out a lot, and now we want to focus on listening, learning, and supporting your needs. Your voices matter, and we are committed to growing and building together.

Lastly, we commit with full hearts and absolute conviction to delivering a WUDC that is transformative, radically accessible, and unforgettable.

After the storm, the jacaranda blooms, and so too will this WUDC, as a testament to our resilience, our community, and our shared future in debating.

P.S. Matt is still sleeping, unaware of the bid result as we post this. He is going to have quite a morning.

The collective voice behind this bid echoes across the globe, but its heartbeat is rooted in Africa, expressed through South Africa, and hosted in Tshwane. This is not the voice of a single institution or city. It is the voice of a continent, carried by a country and grounded in a city shaped by many cultures, languages, and histories, yet bound by a shared sense of belonging.

At its core, this bid is about community, and the African debating community is actively looking to welcome international debaters, not only to compete but to share culture, stories, food, music, and lived experiences.

So tomorrow vote for Tshwane WUDC 2028!

We know that online statistics are often outdated or lack specific city-level context, making it hard to find reliable information on the cost of living and what to expect in Tshwane, which is part of why it was selected for its high affordability. So we collected current prices across a few things we know matter to debaters, taking three recent prices in each category and averaging them out. Our goal is to give you the clearest, most up-to-date picture of South Africa and our host city as a world-class and affordable place to host WUDC.

Beyond this, with our planning focused on full provision of transport and meals, we can significantly reduce the unbudgeted costs on any debater, while keeping people well fed and well entertained throughout the tournament.

We unfortunately received a large number of bad-faith questions and outright falsehoods. We have done our best to engage regardless, but it was disheartening, if not surprising, to see some individuals use anonymity as a cover for vile behaviour. Libel and vitriol directed at respected members of the community is not the conduct of a decent person. Many of these questions arrived overnight, suggesting a coordinated campaign rather than a genuine attempt at engagement.

We are equally horrified by the questions directed at the Brazil bid. This kind of vitriolic behaviour has no place in our community, and we stand firmly against all forms of bias, including antisemitism, racism and discrimination, particularly when these emerge through anonymous Q&A spaces.

We have had private communications with members of the Brazil bid prior, when we each realised that both bids had received nasty questions, although we only saw the specific questions when they were released to the public. Our stance, as communicated to our Brazilian counterparts before the Q&A were posted, is that anonymous questions should not be allowed during this process, and we have offered to file this amendment together.

We have not, and would never support such questions being asked to any bid, and believe in the merits of our bid independently. And we would never even think that any members of the Brazil bid would support the hostile questions we received.

Our bid is grounded in ubuntu, “I am because we are.” Across our two bids, we have experienced what it means to be persecuted, and we take this seriously. We condemn the use of slurs and stereotypes and do not welcome anyone who seeks to weaponise communication and discourse to spread hate. We hope this is clear not only in our words, but in the work of our Organising Committee members to actively combat racism in the greater debating community.

Our response was delayed because we became aware of these comments at the same time as others, across different time zones and work schedules.

Sometimes videos tell a better story than pictures. For WUDC 2028, we want you to see Tshwane the way we see it, welcoming, accessible and safe.

The University of Pretoria is a fully access-controlled campus, accessible only to staff and students with valid cards or access codes. In this video, we take you with us from the moment you arrive at OR Tambo International Airport, onto the Gautrain, and all the way to the Hatfield Campus.

You will also get a glimpse of O.R. Tambo International Airport and the vibrant Hatfield area where the University of Pretoria is located, a neighbourhood filled with everything you need within close proximity, including shopping centres, food places and essentials.

We hope this walk-through with Alyssia Gaitskill (our Tournament Director) and Amber Smith (A volunteer and student at the University of Pretoria) helps you feel at ease, and we look forward to getting your support for Tshwane for WUDC 2028.

It's important to understand how WUDC hosting rights are awarded. So, we've put together a handy graphic to ensure the global community is well informed. We encourage you to be active in supporting what you believe to be the best bid.

As mentioned earlier, the Tshwane WUDC 2028 bid is backed by the entire African continent.

Below is a letter confirming the endorsement from the PAUDC Council. It strengthens what this bid represents: a unified African commitment to expanding access, improving representation, and ensuring meaningful participation across all our regions.

With the collective support of Algeria, Botswana, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zimbabwe through the PAUDC Council, this bid reflects a shared determination to widen the doors of opportunity for all debaters.

For years, visa inaccessibility has significantly limited Africa’s participation in WUDC. While the Pan-African debate community has grown, it has seen limited crossover with the global circuit. This bid stands to be that bridge, backed by the collective support of Africa.

Our goal is not only to bring WUDC back to Africa, but to bring Africa to WUDC.

How to get to Tshwane!
Most international flights arrive at O.R. Tambo Airport in Johannesburg, about 45 to 60 minutes from Pretoria on the Gautrain, a safe and reliable rapid transit system created in the lead up to the 2010 Fifa World Cup hosted in South Africa. Volunteers will meet you at the airport, provide guidance on how to board the Gautrain, and shuttles will take you straight to the University of Pretoria. We will cover all transport for the duration of the tournament.

Visas can be stressful, but we have a proven track record. Many countries can travel visa-free or with a simple eVisa. For other participants, our Visa Committee will provide guidance and support via a country specific support. At Jozi PAUDC, every participant we assisted received their visa with a 100% success rate. We have been advocating for better visa support for years and know how to make it work.

There are direct flights from many countries and many more with simple connections. We will share a map of routes so participants can plan their journey easily.

South Africa is one of the most connected countries in the world, with over 120 diplomatic missions. Whatever your starting point, landing in South Africa will be safe, smooth, and accessible.

In the pictures below, you can see the visa-free countries, direct flight routes, and countries with diplomatic missions.

The World Universities Debating Championship (WUDC) is the largest and most logistically complex debating tournament in the world. Running it takes precision, vision, and experience; our convening team brings all of that to every event they lead.

Lucien Mendela, Convenor, has led Jozi PAUDC, Pretoria SAUDC, and over 15 other major opens, while tabbing WUDC, PAUDC, and more than 50 competitions worldwide. He ensures tournaments run seamlessly at every scale.

Alyissia Gaitskill, Tournament Director, drives equity and inclusion, serving as Equity Officer on Jozi PAUDC and Pretoria SAUDC. Her work makes tournaments accessible, supportive, and representative of the global debating community.

Umar Buckus, Advising Convenor, has convened Uhuru Worlds, Jozi Rumble, Jozi to Accra, Dulwich Schools, and eight other competitions. He has been on PAUDC CAP three times and served on over 30 Chief Adjudication Panels across 13 countries, giving him unmatched insight across tabbing, CAP, and equity roles.

Together, the team combines world-class operational skill, a commitment to accessibility, and deep ties across the global debating community, delivering events rooted in understanding all elements of hosting a major, be it Tabbing, Equity or Chief Adjudication.

Major Events:
• Jozi PAUDC 2025: 28 Rooms, 12 Countries, 100% Visa Success
Africa’s largest intercollegiate tournament reached its biggest scale in a decade, welcoming Liberia and Namibia back to the international debating space.

• Uhuru Worlds 2021–2025: 5 Editions, 60+ Nations, Largest & Most Accessible Tournament in the World.
Logistically impossible but it works due to community buy-in, this free international tournament gives first-time global debaters an experience like no other and connects voices from across the world.

• Jozi to Accra 2020:31 Rooms,16 Nations, First Fully Online African Open
Merging Accra Open and Jozi Rumble, this event pioneered the Discord model for African debate, enabling participation despite limited internet access and laying the foundation for Uhuru Worlds.

• Jozi Rumble 2019: 28 Rooms, 7 Nations, Africa’s Largest Open
A low-cost, high-impact model expanded participation while ensuring high quality experience (& yakka) for all, setting a benchmark for scale, ambition, and inclusivity in Southern African Debating.
