The Ifa Lethu Foundation is excited to receive further donations of artwork during this 20th year anniversary. Ifa Lethu was born 20 years ago through the efforts of Diane Johnstone and the late Bruce Haigh, who were posted at the Australian Embassy in South Africa during the 1970's. That initiative brought together the Australian and South African governments in a journey that saw almost 700 pieces of artwork repatriated from 16 countries. In this, our anniversary year, our repatriation efforts have yielded a further donation of 3 pieces of artwork from Mr. Peter Watters and Diane Watters. Mr Watters was posted at the Australian Embassy 51 years ago in 1975 as the then Immigration Officer. These works of artists David Poshoko and Michael Mapola, whom Peter met at the residence of Bruce Haigh, reflect the significance of the period in South African history.

Given the tensions which characterized global politics a few months ago, these artworks traveled from Australia, to Singapore, Germany, Brussels and Lagos before finally arriving back home in Pretoria at the Australian High Commission. Our thanks to Diane Johnstone and the courier company for making this possible. The Chair of the Ifa Lethu Foundation, the renowned Aerospace Doctor Nomonde Mabuya and Board Director, Dr. Narissa Ramdhani, accepted the donation from the Australian High Commissioner, the Honorable Tegan Brink. Mr Watters, Diane Watters and Diane Johnstone joined us online for memorable event. These pieces will now join the phenomenal journey of the Foundation in its 20th year.

It was an absolute honor and privilege for Ifa Lethu to be involved in the Durban visit of former NASA Astronaut, Dorothy Metcalf.
Her visit, which reached 2000 learners, educators, researchers, the public and media, brought world class space inspiration to this city. Dorothy flew aboard the Space Shuttle, Discovery, and served as the Mission specialist and the robotic arm operator while supporting complex space walk operations. That Mission delivered 27000 pounds of scientific equipment and hardware to the International Space Station, travelling over 6.2 million miles during 238 earth orbits. Sharing her inspiring journey was an absolute feast for us and for the many young audiences that she addressed. Ifa lethu plans many such engagements with former and current NASA Astronauts to demonstrate the interest by NASA in those who have creative or art skills. One never stops learning.

As an organization that has promoted the Heritage Economy since 2008, through its work in repatriation, creative entrepreneurship and sustainability, the Ifa Lethu Foundation was pleased to continue its advocacy work by engaging the Mayor of Ethekwini, Councillor Cyril Xaba, at the Mayors breakfast. This engagement provided a strategic opportunity for us to highlight the parlous state of our heritage sites while also emphasizing the lack of support for heritage organizations who play a critical role in contributing to the GDP of the country.
