a total of 16 Mpox cases have been recorded in South Africa, with three deaths as at 25 June 2024. The affected communities are in Gauteng (Sedibeng, Johannesburg, Tembisa, Pretoria, Soweto, and Mamelodi), KwaZulu-Natal (eThekwini, Ladysmith, and uMgungundlovu) and Cape Town in Western Cape.

Anyone can contract Mpox regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation and race. People at high risk include those living with chronic conditions such as HIV, TB and diabetes.

Mpox is preventable and treatable, and treatment for both mild and severe cases is available.
