Disability Breeds Ability๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’›

Our Transformation Seminar, โ€œDisability Breeds Ability,โ€ provided an opportunity to challenge perceptions surrounding disability and celebrate the abilities that often emerge from experiences of difference. In collaboration with VITA, we were honoured to engage with EC members from VITA, the Subcommittee and also students living with disability , who shared personal insights into their day to day experiences. Through their stories, they spoke about living with disabilities and the ways in which they have adapted, navigated challenges and continued to thrive.

The seminar reminded us that disability does not mean inability. Rather, different circumstances can reveal and strengthen abilities in ways we may not always recognise. The speakers highlighted that they are not different from anyone else. They experience the same emotions, aspirations and ambitions, while also embracing what makes each of them unique.
We extend our sincere appreciation to VITA, for creating space for meaningful conversations, sharing their experiences and helping us foster a more inclusive understanding of disability.

Through conversations like these, we continue to learn, challenge perceptions and recognise that being different does not make one less capable; it makes each individual unique.

For Day 4 of Mandela Week, we hosted our 67 Minutes of Kindness activation, where we distributed toiletries to students as a small gesture of care and support.๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’›

Inspired by Nelson Mandelaโ€™s legacy of service, this initiative was a reminder that even the simplest acts of kindness can have a meaningful impact. We hope these essential items bring comfort and encourage a culture of compassion within our university community.

A sincere thank you to everyone who contributed and helped make this initiative a success. Together, we continue to make a difference one act of kindness at a time.

As part of our Mandela Week initiatives, we hosted a Hygiene Drop Off, beginning with the donation of sanitary towels and toiletries to Vukani Mawethu School in Mamelodi. Through this initiative, we aimed to support learners by providing access to essential hygiene products and promoting their well being.

We also donated sanitary towels to the Student Health Services to help ensure that UP students in need have access to these essential items.

Every act of kindness, no matter how small, contributes to building a more caring and compassionate community. Through these initiatives, we continue to embrace the spirit of Ubuntu by uplifting and supporting those around us.๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’›
