The Solidarity Network stands firmly in solidarity with Takunda Mhuka.
Takunda, a student activist from Midlands State University in Gweru, has been a consistent and principled voice alongside fellow students in opposing the Cabinet-backed Constitution Amendment Bill (No. 3). He has publicly argued that the proposed amendments represent an attempt to entrench power rather than strengthen democracy, and has consistently called for the Bill to be either withdrawn or subjected to a national referendum.
For exercising his constitutional right to participate in public hearings and express dissenting views, Takunda now faces severe repercussions. In April, following his involvement in legitimate public engagement processes, he was arrested and accused of involvement in the destruction of private property. Despite the serious concerns surrounding the case, he has been denied bail and has remained in custody at Harare Remand Prison for months.
We at Solidarity Network regard Takunda Mhuka as a prisoner of conscience. His continued detention appears directly linked to his peaceful activism and legitimate criticism of proposed constitutional changes.
We call for the unconditional release of Takunda Mhuka and all other activists detained for exercising their rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. The right to participate in public discourse, especially on matters as fundamental as constitutional amendments, must be protected, not criminalised.
Justice and democratic principles demand better.
