A husband-and-wife duo are picking up the pieces of a Cape Town community centre after a fire caused extensive damage to the property. While vital after-school and holiday programmes have been suspended, the couple hope to build back better.

I think we sometimes imagine that surviving the crisis means the crisis is over.

It doesn't.

Sometimes that's when the real work begins.

In this week's Friday 413 Reading from Survival to Sovereignty, I read about something Sister Di said to me that I didn't understand at the time:
“ICU is the easy part, Leigh. Taking Kelvin home is where the s**t gets real.”

She was right.

After 413 days in ICU, getting Kelvin home felt like the finish line.

It wasn't.

It was the beginning of another chapter entirely.
