On International Day, we are reminded that nowadays we are spending more and more time in online and digital spaces.

Mobile phones and other portable internet connected devices are reshaping family, educational and wider social life in profound ways. Societies are only beginning to understand what it means for young people – and adults as well – to spend so many hours a day immersed in screen-based digital media.

As these realities come into sharper focus, UNESCO is taking concrete steps to support public education in online and digital environments.

Uruguay, through its Ceibal initiative, supports one of the longest running national digital education platforms in Latin America. The platform reaches and benefits more than 700,000 students and teachers across the country. It has helped to ensure that there is a trusted destination for quality controlled and curriculum aligned digital learning resources.

Uruguay is part of the UNESCO-UNICEF Gateways to Public Digital Learning Initiative which supports governments in developing public digital learning platforms while facilitating international knowledge exchange.
