In 2008, Thanda was founded in an effort to fill the gaps for children where schools, social services, and communities had been stretched thin. What started as a basic model for after-school support has evolved into a holistic approach to community development. Today, we provide Educational & Organic Farming development programmes that impact over 14,500 individuals in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

Isithukuthezi asibi khona uma usebenza ngehlabathi 😉 Healthy roots = healthy plants. Protecting the soil protects the harvest.

These weird-looking things are nematodes. We learned about them during training with farmers and the FSED team. Nematodes can damage crops by attacking plant roots, causing swellings that block water and nutrient uptake, leaving plants stunted. Healthy soil really does matter.

Phew! It’s been a hot few days in KZN 🥵 But summer is also when KZN receives the most rainfall, making water harvesting and smart irrigation very important. Our teams support farmers with practical irrigation advice, resources and on-the-ground support 🌧️ Remember: Amanzi ayigugu… kumele siwasebenzise ngobuhlakani.

Did you know? Farming during a heatwave is especially challenging. Extreme heat stresses crops and dries out soil faster. Even small increases in temperature can reduce crop yields.

Grade R is now compulsory 🇿🇦 and more children accessing early learning is a good thing.

But the latest ELOM results show is that access alone isn’t enough. Across SA, fewer children are ready for big school. Only 42% were on track! 😟

With the right curriculum and well-trained teachers, we can change that, and we’re seeing it happen in Mtwalume!

Sithanda ukwabelana ngezindaba ezinhle 💙 We’ve just received our 2025 ELOM results…

82% of the children who graduated from our ECD programmes in 2025 were on track to start Grade R. We wish them the very best of luck for the year ahead at big school! ✨

December has been a whirlwind of festive fun, and we’re so grateful to have celebrated with so many of the children and families we support 🎄✨

As schools close and many of our programmes begin to slow down, we want to wish all our supporters, staff, and the community around us a happy holiday season. To those still working their plots and farms, we wish you all the best with your final harvests of the year.
