Asivikelane was founded in 2020 and is co-ordinated and led by 13 grassroots partner organisations spread across South Africa. At its core, Asivikelane aims to improve access to basic services for people living in informal settlements and to build meaningful relationships between these communities, government and other key stakeholders.

Asivikelane has created multi-stakeholder platforms or "hubs" in 8 municipalities. These hubs are a space for participants to work together to find sustainable solutions to service delivery issues and related budget issues. We train residents to engage with and understand government budgets to ensure sufficient funding is allocated to water, sanitation, refuse removal and disaster management services.

We are excited to announce that Asivikelane Western Cape, Development Action Group and Knysna Municipality signed an agreement to formalise the work of Asivikelane community plumbers. Community plumbers are working with communities to strengthen water and sanitation services in informal settlements.

This collaboration forms part of a broader effort to introduce sustainable, community-driven solutions to infrastructure challenges. established a Repairs and Maintenance Hub to respond to recurring issues affecting communal water and sanitation services, training community plumbers to fix leaking taps and faulty toilets.

At the core of this initiative lies a powerful shift: moving communities from being passive recipients of services to active partners in service delivery.

Community plumbers are working in their communities to repair and maintain communal taps and toilets, thus improving response times, reducing infrastructure failures, saving water, and improving access to basic services for informal settlement residents. This demonstrates the value of skills development, and the importance of community ownership.
