Mr. Karabo Maphanga is a 33-year-old male who has been living with Juvenile Xanthogranuloma since 2018. Despite seeking medical assistance at six healthcare facilities, including Jane Furse Hospital, St Rita’s Hospital, Polokwane Provincial Hospital, Mankweng Hospital, Rob Ferreira Hospital, and Steve Biko Hospital, he has not yet received definitive treatment.
The condition has progressively affected his quality of life, causing significant pain, persistent itching, foul odor, and recurrent discharge of pus and blood from the lesion. To manage the wound, he is required to purchase specialized antiseptic products for daily wound care, which places a considerable financial burden on him as he is currently unemployed.
In addition to the physical symptoms, the condition has resulted in substantial psychological and social distress. Mr. Maphanga reports experiencing stigma, ridicule, and a loss of self-confidence. The visible nature of the growth has also impacted his family life, particularly his three children. Furthermore, the condition has created challenges in completing identity verification processes required for obtaining a Smart ID.
Given the severity of his symptoms, the prolonged duration of the condition, and its significant impact on his physical, emotional, social, and economic well-being, Mr. Maphanga requires urgent specialist assessment and definitive surgical intervention.
He is appealing for assistance to access the medical treatment necessary to improve his health and quality of life.
