Wild Ocean Wanderers

Wild Ocean Wanderers The wanderings of a passionate marine biologist couple. We're a passionate marine biologist couple with a love for adventure.

Our wanderings started off in Plettenberg Bay, South Africa, where we launched a variety of collaborative research projects on endangered humpback dolphins, white sharks, Cape fur seals and their interactions with fisheries. Following this we had the amazing opportunity to work and live on remote sub-Antarctic Marion Island where we collected data on southern elephant seals, Antarctic and sub-Anta

rctic fur seals and killer whales for the long-running and globally important Marion Island Marine Mammal Program (MIMMP). We were then based in Walvis Bay, Namibia, where our work focused on setting up field surveys to collect data from local whale, dolphin and seal populations while running a marine education centre for Sea Search Research and Conservation. Most recently we made a long-term move to Vancouver Island in the beautiful province of British Columbia, Canada, where we continue to work in the world of marine mammal research and conservation through Bay Cetology, a local non-profit, and WSP Canada Inc., a global environmental consulting company. Like our page to follow our work adventures as we wander to some of North America's wildest oceans.

Grateful to celebrate one year on Vancouver Island in beautiful British Columbia, Canada!🏔 From finding fulfilling jobs in marine biology to settling into our seaside flat, securing a vehicle, and navigating the ins and outs of Canadian healthcare, it's been a journey. Now, we're tackling our first Canadian tax return with help from a South African expat. Its one down and two to go in our journey to obtain Canadian citizenship! 🇨🇦

We've just hit the 6-month milestone since our big move to Vancouver Island in the beautiful province of British Columbia, Canada! 🍁 It's been quite the journey adjusting to a new culture and environment, but we can confidently say it's been nothing short of an incredible experience.

The past six months have seen us put in some extra work, making sure all our post-arrival immigration admin is in order. From securing Canadian permanent residency and social insurance numbers to getting our provincial health care, setting up bank accounts, finding employment, sorting out accommodation, obtaining driver's licenses, and earning a few other certifications – it's been a whirlwind!

But it's not just about paperwork and logistics. Through our new jobs, we've had the privilege of meeting some truly fantastic people and embarking on some unforgettable adventures. Dani's recent field trip to the enchanting island of Haida Gwaii, her time in Alert Bay, and my trip to Baffin Island in the high Arctic have been mind-blowing.

Here's to the next six months and beyond! 🌟 We can't wait to see what else this incredible island and its surroundings have in store for us. 🌄🌊🏔️

Our Story... Research. Conservation. Awareness.

Wild Ocean is a science-based marine conservation initiative dedicated to collaborative research and monitoring that can provide conservation management authorities with scientific advice, while also raising awareness and funds for various research and conservation projects. Although facilitating the collection of data and samples on a variety of marine species, we currently focus on the endangered Indian Ocean humpback dolphin, the often misunderstood Cape fur seal, the iconic Great white shark and various recreational fishery species in Plettenberg Bay.
