KuCoNa’s AI Journey Has Begun!

On Monday evening 31st August, AI for Everyone hosted an exciting AI Opportunity Evening at KuCoNa, with live demonstrations of how AI can help people find work, develop new skills and grow their businesses.

Everyone who attended signed up for the AI for Everyone South Africa eight-week training programme, and the first training session took place lat KuCoNa last night!

Participants will continue learning together at KuCoNa every Tuesday evening for the next eight weeks. We are excited to see where this journey takes them!

BuildSTEM Bricks Challenge: Week in Review

This week, the children in the BuildSTEM Bricks Challenge class at KuCoNa explored the fascinating world of engineering by learning more about the technical components in their Young Engineers building trays.

They practiced identifying and using different beams, pins and axles, discovering how each component contributes to creating a strong and functional structure. Through building, testing and making adjustments, they applied practical science and engineering concepts such as movement, stability, force and mechanical connections.

The children then put their new knowledge and skills into action by constructing their own mountain motorcycles!

They had great fun working through the building process, solving problems and seeing their ideas come to life through hands-on science and engineering.

BuildSTEM Big Builders Programme: Exploring Wind Power!

This week at KuCoNa, children in the BuildSTEMBig Builders programme explored how wind power works and had great fun constructing their own windmills.

They learnt that windmills have been used for more than 1,000 years for tasks such as grinding grain and pumping water. Today, modern wind turbines convert the energy of moving air into electricity that can power homes, schools and communities. ⚡

The children put their ideas into action—building, testing, problem-solving and learning together. A wonderful example of how hands-on activities can make science and engineering both meaningful and fun!

Four positions are available at the KuCoNa Create & Connect Centre through our partnership with Healthy Futures South Africa for the Basic Package of Support (BPS) programme:

• BPS Site Manager
• Youth Coach Guide
• Junior Youth Coach
• Youth Mobiliser

The opportunities range from a matric-level position to roles requiring relevant qualifications and professional experience.

Apply before the end of the day on 31 August 2026.

Growing Food, Sharing Knowledge and Strengthening Community

What an energising afternoon at KuCoNa yesterday, 28 August!

The Let’s Grow Together workshop brought together an inspiring mix of local gardeners, food growers, community projects and residents—all sharing ideas about how to grow more healthy, locally produced food and build a stronger, more connected community.

The participation of different generations, together with men and women representing diverse food-growing and community spaces, added great value and depth to the discussion.

A big thank you to Roland Damons and Bernice Roeland for initiating and facilitating this valuable workshop, and bringing people together, guiding the conversation and helping to turn the ideas shared into practical next steps. Thank you also to everyone who generously shared their knowledge, experience and ideas.

The workshop marked an important step towards strengthening local food-growing networks, sharing practical knowledge and increasing access to healthy, locally produced food.
