Heroes Creative Joint wishes you a reflective 50th anniversary of the bravery and defiance of the youth of 1976.

As we commemorate this momentous day in our history, may it give us all the courage to look into the proverbial mirror and ask ourselves some uncomfortable questions about who we have become, and continue becoming.

Who are we when our places of learning, for instance, make the news for reasons other than academics, arts, sports, and achievement?

To commemorate June 16, the youth of Mkhondo had "Vuka Comrade" an all night virgil which served as a reminder that things are not as they should be, questioning the status quo.l in a way.

One of the questions today, where is the youth of 2026 when some of our schools have become playgrounds for knife-wielding vandals and bullies?

Is the youth of ’76 the same generation that now keeps children at home out of fear, rather than standing together to ensure that schools remain places of learning, discipline, and hope?

The youth of 1976 understood that education was worth fighting for. They faced bullets so future generations could enter classrooms with dignity and opportunity. We must ask ourselves whether we are honouring that sacrifice.

A sacrifice for safe schools, responsible leadership, active parenting, and young people who understand the power they have to shape the future.

May the spirit of “Vuka Comrade” remind both elders and youth that freedom is not only inherited but it is also protected and passed on.
