Our names are Fernando and Lani and we are two veterinarians currently working South Africa. Our aim is to bring awareness to issues facing wildlife and the environment and hopefully in the future provide aspiring and/or interested veterinarians with tools and up to date information on how to combat such issues.

Last month we treated a Southern white-faced owl that presented with emaciation and a drooping right wing. During the initial physical examination, a possible luxation or fracture of the clavicle or coracoid bone was suspected. Radiographs later confirmed a clavicular injury.

Anti-inflammatories were started and a figure-of-eight bandage together with a body wrap was applied. The owl was then transferred to to continue with conservation management. This consists of strict rest for several weeks and physical therapy

The owl has now been moved to one of the flight enclosures and, once it completes its rehabilitation, we think it will be able to be released back into the wild.

Many thanks to for bringing the bird to us and for sponsoring the treatment.

Sunday funday turned into anything but for Bob.

A close encounter with a porcupine left Bob sporting a new accessory. Once under anaesthesia we were able to remove the porcupine quill without too much trouble and Bob should be back to normal in no time.

PERIDONTAL DISEASE

Did you know that a recent report showed that over 80% of dogs and over 70% of cats show signs of dental disease by 3 years of age!

Without dental care, painful dental problems can arise and infections can spread to the heart, liver or kidneys. Usually we don’t see dental issues until they are causing pain so that is why regular checks are important!

How can you look after your pets teeth?

🦷 regular brushing- start slowly, just with your finger, then use a soft cloth and then finally move to pet toothbrush. Only use pet toothpaste as human stuff can be toxic.
🦷 Dental chews (vet approved only)

🦷 Dental diets (such as hills t/d) if you pet has a bad issue.

🦷 Professional cleans- even with excellent home care, pets need regular professional cleaning.

***GRAPHIC IMAGES IF YOU SWIPE***

We recently had a very young dog, just over 1 year, die very suddenly at the owners home. The dog was seemingly healthy and so the owner requested a post mortem to figure out what had occurred.

What we found is a deadly reminder as to why your dogs needs MONTHLY deworming in our area.

We found a ruptured oesophageal granulomatous nodule in the oesophagus and also surrounding the abdominal aorta. Coming out of these nodules were worms (nematodes)- SPIROCERCA LUPI.

If your dog ingests dung beetles (intermediate host) or mice, lizards, rabbits, hedgehogs (transport hosts) then they are at a high risk.

Signs are varied but most commonly we see vomiting, coughing, regurgitation and emaciation due to the inability to eat.

So please, If you are in an area that has Spirocerca (Phalaborwa is), then ensure your dog is getting monthly Milbemycin treatment (Milpro or mimbemax) to keep them covered.

One of our favourite conservationists and patients, Shadow. She works in conservation with but in her spare time enjoys playing fetch with just about anything- sticks and small leaves taking priority.
She took her yearly vaccinations like the tough cookie she is and got a clean bill of health.
