At there are 8 species of kingfisher you could see, some more common than others.

Fun facts:

🐦Contrary to popular belief not all kingfishers eat fish, some are insectivores.

🐦The pied kingfisher is the largest bird that can truly hover using only wing power.

🐦The giant kingfisher is the largest kingfisher in Africa

🐦The african pygmy kingfisher is an intra african migrant. It can be seen in South Africa between September - March and spends the rest of the year in Central Africa.

🐦The malachite kingfisher is fiercely territorial even chasing their young away 30 days after they have hatched.

Quality education plays a vital role in the future of conservation around the world. With education comes the power to create change. Here at we provide environmental education lessons to grade 6 and 7 learners from the local primary school. While classroom lessons are useful for the development of knowledge, a true passion for the natural world is sparked when you are immersed in nature.

We are fundraising to send a total of 40 grade 7 learners for a 3 day, 2 night environmental camp with Koru Camp this year. Koru Camp provides immersive nature experiences and conservation education to people from disadvantaged communities. The goal of each 3 day camp is to teach the learners everything from nature in the bush to sustainable living.

To help us achieve our goal we are asking for your help by providing donations towards each of the 4 camps we hope to fund this year.

Donation suggestions:
$25/£19 for 1 learner per night
$50/£38 to fund 1 learner for an entire camp
$650/ £494 to fund an entire camp of 10 learners and 3 supervisors

What a difference some rain can make ⛈️

Check out these before and after pics from around base showing how beautiful and green everything is at the moment 🌿

We have now fully transitioned into our summer season here at which means thunderstorms, high temperatures and of course lots of mud… This can make drives a little interesting (hands up if you’ve gotten stuck with us on drives 🙈) but this doesn’t stop us because at this time of year the animals and vegetation are thriving in the lush conditions making for some special sightings 🙌

🪶Just like that we have landed in 2024! 🪶

🦅We ended 2023 with the pride of lions on a kill and we begin 2024 with vultures cleaning up the carcass. Vultures can spot carcasses from 4 miles away. It is quite special to see all the vultures descending from the heights of the thermals to the ground in huge numbers. Sometimes 100+ birds can be at one carcass which is why they are so vulnerable to poisoned carcasses.

"Life on base is amazing, but on off days it's great to get out and explore the beautiful surroundings.

In my time here we visited the amazing Kruger National park on a guided drive, seeing a very different type of reserve, and even getting lucky enough to see baby Hyena!

We also hiked through Blyde Canyon, saw amazing scenery and enjoyed a beautiful waterhole all within an hour's drive!

Just more amazing ways to soak up the amazing experience of being in South Africa."

After 6 months the time has finally arrived when the bush explodes with Impala lambs!

Impalas give birth within a month window to help the survival of their young. This reproductive method is why Impalas are so successful and therefore numerous in the bush.
