We are please to have been part of the PUCMA (Pongolo - Umzimkulu Catchment Management Agency hosted by EDTEA Newcastle, where the agenda focused on Local Government Water Resources from the perspective of water conservation and water demand management.
As we are located within a Strategic Water Resource Area, these discussions are particularly pertinent to us. South Africa is already a water scarce country, with cliamte change causing severe negative impacts on our nations water resource.
Added to this, we have just entered a 5 year drought cycle. Last year, June 2025 the Ntshingwayo Dam (formerly known as the Chelmsford dam) was at 94% capacity. This year, the dam is at 74% capacity. 20% less than we were last year, and this is only the begining of the drought period.
This only highlights the urgency of proactive actions to protect our water resources long term.
