Our Story
Linganisa is an isiZulu word meaning, “to equalize”. We work for justice for parents and children. Our purpose is to support parents and children in all aspects of inequalities experienced. We undertake projects to provide a variety of support services to the most vulnerable. There are many parents who face being isolated or alienated from their children. Linganisa is committed to providing a support platform for such vulnerable parents and children. At Linganisa we are motivated to work with vulnerable families, who often find themselves with few options to re-establish contact with each other. Parental Alienation (PA) seems to be an ever-increasing syndrome, as high conflict divorces become more prevalent. PA occurs when one parent (or another family member, friend or other person) forcibly prevents contact from a loving parent. The experts assure us that the alienator (who forcibly prevents contact) displays a specific personality type. There is usually a planned campaign of denigration by the alienating parent against the targeted parent (who is denied access to his/her child). The child consequently becomes a substrate of the alienation, and is systematically turned against the targeted, loving parent. PA is not gender-specific, but rather a consequence of a severe mental disorder which is found in both men and women. At Linganisa, as our name suggests, we work with honesty, compassion and purity to restore dignity to the parents and children who are kept away from each other for no apparent reason. We also note that grandparents are also caught up in the web of being alienated, so the child victims are isolated not only from a loving parent, but grandparents and extended family as well. Linganisa is a new NGO, and we recently changed our focus to assist the increasing numbers of alienated parents and grandparents in our society. The most significant benefits are to the children who often undergo extreme emotions and behaviors as a result of PA. The importance of re-unification with loving family cannot be underplayed, as this contact is mandatory to ensure optimum emotional and psychological well-being of the growing child.
