Squirrel Hill Horse Haven

Squirrel Hill Horse Haven The Squirrel Hill Horse Haven is a beautiful place that is home to rescued horses, rescued donkeys and a rescue yard dog !

This page will bring you the highlights and insights of this important place, to share the love for these animals. “I have been a horse rider since the age of 11 and have had an inexplicable connection with these huge beings with such a peaceful and graceful demeanour. I rode and competed for many years until I realised that the sport wasn’t what I needed in my life and the atmosphere the sport pr

ovided wasn't a good fit for me. All the horses at my yard are trained in natural horsemanship. This is a very gentle and calm training method that listens to the horse. The training involves being able to catch the subtle movements and reactions that a horse gives so that a bond can be built between human and horse. This allows you to “speak” the horse's language and not expect them to understand yours. This way there is no bullying a horse into giving you what you want. It is a case of the horse wants to give you what you want because you are a partnership. There is trust and communication that is built over time and each horse takes a different amount of time to get there. Every horse has a story and a background and a history and these things need to be taken into consideration when you are doing natural horsemanship so that you are communicating in a “language” that the horse understands.”

Yesterday morning we woke up to a very shocking sight! One of our beloved donkeys, Millie, had managed to almost deglove her front leg. She has been treated and is being kept calm in a stable. We will need to clean and dress the wound every day and keep her calm, but she will recover. It is just going to be a very long and slow recovery. Please note pictures are of a sensitive nature.

An update on our Eleanore. These are before and after pics. It's been a long ride but we are winning. This 23+ year old girl was so starved and neglected that it has taken 10 months to get her like this. Her teeth are almost completely worn down at the back and she has taken time to get used to eating good food (or any food for that matter) on a regular basis. These are before and after pics. We got her on 06 May 2026 and it is now 29 March 2026. It is amazing what good food a little exercise (roaming our 4ha field) and lots of love can do. There is no excuse for a horse to look like she did when she arrived!

Today we are so thankful for the lovely rain. Our grass is growing and grazing is getting good again. Hopefully this is a sign that this session is going to be a good one for our grazing ###

We said goodbye to our Savannah. She passed away in her sleep last night. Go in peace my pretty girl, you are loved beyond measure and you leave a very big hole in our hearts and our herd. You will be missed everyday. We will make sure your siesta tree is kept just as you like it. Eleanore is already missing you as she stood under it today. Go run free my girl, meet up with Soxx and play. You will forever stay in our hearts. I know you were tired, so I'm glad you are free now. Love you always

Some have left — but they’re never truly gone.
Their hooves no longer touch the ground,
but every breath of wind, every ray of sunlight on the field
reminds us of them…
of those who were more than just horses.

They were our joy, our strength,
our silent friends who understood without words.
And though their bodies rest,
their spirits remain with us —
close, unseen, eternal.

We remember them in every moment of pure laughter,
in every glance at the stars,
in every warmth we feel for no reason.
Because they are part of us. And always will be.

🕊️ To every horse who changed our lives…
We still talk about you.
We still feel you.
We still love you. 🤍🐴

We had a beautiful soul arrive at our facility this past week. She is in shocking condition with evidence of serious neglect. Her feet are terrible - way too short and the inside heel collapsing on her one front foot. With her teeth needing to be done quite urgently, she is battling to eat the baled grass we use at night for the babies, but she is enjoying her concentrate and grazing her face off all day on our nice green grazing. She is starting to merge with the herd nicely, only a few little issue to to work out between her and the lead mare, but that is normal and she will soon have her very own space in the hierarchy of the herd. This baby is gentle, sweet and loving with the softest eyes and a beautiful nature, I know she will make a full recovery, but it will be slow going and the repairs to her feet are going to take a while, but our amazing farrier is positive that she will come right with care and time. Even though she was neglected like she was and even ridden in her shocking condition, she has no malice towards people, which is surprising. She loves her treats and her carrots (cut nice and small for her to manage until the dentist comes). Welcome home Eleanor - you will be forever loved and cared for here with us.

I will post updates as we go with her to show her progress :-)

Our dam has recovered so well this year with all this rain. So much so, that it has run over and created a babbling brook and another mini dam. So blessed to have this rain this year ### other videos on the comments as FB won't allow more than one for some reason

We spent an amazing day with the horses, playing in our dam. So blessed to have had such wonderful rain this year to fill our little dam. Lots of fun after a hard day's work loading and off loading grass for the horses. Our "one-eyed monster" Savannah had a blast with Carmyn Eylers
