Day 8 of the Karoo Ride - The Final Day

After a late night waiting for a tow truck to collect the broken trailer, four team member unfortunately missed dinner. The cyclists set off at 6:20 AM on Friday morning. The crisp air greeted them as they headed towards Bain's Kloof Pass, they were surrounded by the breathtaking mountain range.

As they climbed the pass, they were greeted by dassies who darted across the road and a beautiful sunrise illuminating the rugged peaks behind them. Road signs warned them of leopards for the next 23 kilometers, adding an extra thrill to the ride. As they pedaled through the pine forest section, the fresh scent of pine filled the air, and the rising sun cast golden light into every nook and cranny of the mountains—a truly magnificent sight.

The climb lasted 20 kilometers, it was hard, a true test of endurance, before they descended on the other side, where everyone regrouped for a well-earned breakfast at the bottom of the pass.

From there, they pushed on towards Wellington, portaging through to Melkbosstrand. At Eden-on-Bay, the team was warmly received by the Rotary Club of Blouberg. A special moment followed as DG Raj’s letter was handed over and read out by President Lynn Wade.

The finish line was filled with cheers, hugs, congratulations, and even a few tears as the cyclists celebrated their incredible achievement. To close off an unforgettable journey, the team gathered at Blue Peter for the final prize-giving. Each cyclist received a trophy, a token of their determination and commitment.

A particularly prestigious moment came when Mike Ferreira was honored with a Paul Harris Award for his generous contributions to Rotary and the Magical Karoo Ride.

It was a spectacular celebration, and before the night was even over, the cyclists were already planning next year’s adventure!

A huge thank you to everyone who supported, cheered, and made this ride an unforgettable experience. Until next year—here’s to more mountains, sunrises, and the road ahead!

Day 7 of the Karoo (Day 9 of the Ride)

After the grueling challenges of Day 7—conquering the long climbs of the Old Postal Route en route to Sutherland—the cyclists of the 2025 Magical Karoo Ride set off on Day 7 with a mixture of weariness and trepidation. This was the longest planned stage of the ride, stretching from Sutherland to the Tangkwa Padstal. The early morning air was a crisp 5°C, a stark contrast to the 38°C that would await them in the Tangkwa later that day.

Despite the day being mostly downhill, the route still demanded effort, with 800m of vertical ascent. The riders descended the Sutherland Pass, speeding toward the Ceres Turnoff. Some of them set local land speed records before hitting the dirt section, which would lead them to their final destination for the day. After 45km, a much-needed breakfast awaited them, thoughtfully prepared by the ever-supportive crew.

As the group pressed on, they regrouped at the top of each climb. The first major climb at the 60km mark tested everyone’s endurance. For some, the toll of the week’s cycling proved too much, and they had to load onto the support vehicles. But those who continued pushed through, experiencing the raw beauty of the Karoo. The last 20km through the Tangkwa Karoo was a moment of serenity—a time to truly soak in the solitude of the vast landscape. As the cyclists neared the Tangkwa Patstal, they slowed their pace, savoring the final moments of this magical ride.

Not all went smoothly, though. A few cyclists encountered mechanical issues with their mountain bikes. While one could be repaired, the other was not so lucky. It was an incredibly disappointing moment, as this ride had been a personal challenge and a goal for many. The heartbreak of not being able to complete the journey was felt deeply, a reminder of the unpredictability of such an adventure.

For some of the riders, this arrival at the Tankwa Padstal was a moment two years in the making. When planning the route the previous year, the organizers had not anticipated that the Padstal would be closed on one of the only three days of the year it didn’t operate—New Year’s Day, Christmas Day, and Wednesdays. That unfortunate timing had left riders without the promised beer and hamburger at the end of their long ride. This year, extra care was taken to ensure they arrived on a Thursday, when the Padstal was open.

When they finally reached it, those who had been on the previous ride joked that they had to cycle two years just to earn their hamburger. Unfortunately, for some, the much-anticipated meal didn’t quite live up to expectations—but the beer and chips were excellent, and the sense of accomplishment far outweighed any culinary disappointment.

The day, however, was far from over. After leaving the Tankwa Padstal, the group portaged 90km to their final destination. The first stretch was dirt road, and midway through, disaster struck—a trailer carrying equipment suffered a broken axle, which also punctured a tire. A towing company had to be called, and while the rest of the cyclists continued on, a few stayed behind to assist with the stranded trailer.

These unsung heroes endured a long, exhausting day, sacrificing their chance to participate in the evening’s celebratory program at the Tulbach Hotel. Their efforts, however, ensured that the ride continued to function as planned. Without their dedication and selflessness, the event would not have been the success it was.

As the penultimate day of the 2025 Magical Karoo Ride came to a close, cyclists, supporters, and sponsors gathered to reflect on the journey. Each rider had their own story of struggle and triumph, and each supporter had played an irreplaceable role in making it all possible. Though the road had been long, both physically and mentally, this ride was about more than just cycling—it was about endurance, camaraderie, and the unbreakable spirit of those who dared to take on the Karoo.

Day 7 of riding in the Karoo (day 9 including the Prologue)

The day kicked off with an early 5 AM departure from Fraserburg as the cyclists set out towards Sutherland. Unlike last year’s direct route, this year they opted for the old postal route, a path that branched off left out of Fraserburg and presented significantly more climbs, challenges, and rewards. Though the route was tougher, it was undeniably more scenic, offering a true Karoo experience filled with vast landscapes, remote beauty, and a sense of solitude that only this region can provide.

As the riders made their way through the heart of the Karoo, they passed several massive ostrich farms—some home to hundreds of ostriches in large encampments. A striking and eerie sight along the way was the skeleton of a horse, a stark reminder of the unforgiving terrain and the endurance required to thrive in such a harsh environment. Not far from there, a few wild horses were spotted, adding a moment of awe and appreciation for the untamed wilderness surrounding us.

The first 77km was a solid ride, reaching the highest point of the entire journey, marking a significant milestone for the cyclists. From there, a steep but short descent led into a long, flat stretch towards Sutherland. However, what should have been a steady ride was made incredibly challenging by a relentless headwind and soaring Karoo temperatures, testing the cyclists’ endurance and mental strength. Despite the tough conditions, the determination and resilience of the riders shone through as they powered forward, battling the elements to complete the day’s ride.

Once again, the support drivers proved invaluable, ensuring that all cyclists remained well-hydrated, nourished, and injury-free. They responded quickly to a puncture on one of the vehicles, fixing it efficiently to keep everything running smoothly. A few cyclists may have picked up a stomach bug, but thanks to the thorough preparation of the team, the necessary medication was on hand, and everyone could push through without too much disruption.

The day wrapped up at the Blue Moon Restaurant in Sutherland, where spirits were high as the group gathered for a well-deserved evening of relaxation, camaraderie, and celebration. The night featured the awards session, fines, and sergeants’ session, bringing laughter and light hearted moments after a physically demanding day.

There’s something about the Karoo that lingers with you long after you leave—the vast open spaces, the silence, the untamed beauty, and the feeling of being completely present in the moment. Day 6 was more than just a ride; it was a reminder of perseverance, adventure, and the deep connection between nature and the human spirit.

Day 5 in the Karoo

The team set off from Loxton at 5am this morning, greeted by chilly weather and a light drizzle. But with a tailwind at our backs, we moved swiftly through. The rain left behind a dramatic view on the horizon, with windmills, beams of sun through the clouds and rain showers in the distance painting a picture-perfect Karoo landscape, weaving our way between the rain showers we were rewarded with a breathtaking rainbow—a sight to behold!

Today’s ride was nothing short of spectacular. Along the way, horses trotted up to the fences as if to cheer us on, and the open roads made for an exhilarating ride. The tailwind pushed us hastily forward, making the ride faster than expected, though the climbs tested our endurance. However this nurtured the true to the spirit of the journey, we supported and motivated one another, making the challenge all the more rewarding.

Approximately 5 hours and 45 minutes later, we rolled into Fraserburg, having experienced one of the most stunning cycling days yet.

To top off the day, the team indulged in a delicious Karoo Lamb Braai at The Marigold House, complete with scrumptious salads and an evening filled with laughter and camaraderie. The evening drew to a close with a pudding of home grown Guava’s, ice cream, cream and custard.

A day well spent, and memories well made!
