Although Beyond grooming school is not a direct initiative by NPGASA it is an innitiative by of one of the directors.

We welcome everyone to join in and let's grow something awesome.

In yesterday's session we discussed how to reach the most people possible & regularly and it was suggested and agreed on that we would start an open grooming community WhatsApp group.

But if you already feel left out don't wory...
We look forward to see there in the next session:

Beyond Grooming school is a community for groomers business owners and teams who want more than just daily bookings and rushing around to make ends meet.

We meet, learn, share ideas, and talk about the real side of running a grooming business — pricing, staff, systems, marketing, and growth.

It’s a space for support, direction, and quality advice so no one has to build alone.

A skilled pet groomer is defined by a mix of technical ability, animal handling skills, and professional qualities.
A skilled groomer doesn’t just make pets look good—they care for their health, comfort, and safety, while also providing a positive, professional experience for the owner

Here’s a breakdown:

1. Technical Expertise

Proficient in bathing, drying, brushing, dematting, deshedding, clipping, and hand-scissoring.

Knowledgeable about different breeds and their standard grooming styles.

Skilled in using grooming tools safely (clippers, blades, scissors, dryers, nail trimmers).

Ability to recognize and care for different coat types (double coat, curly, wire-haired, etc.).

2. Animal Handling & Care

Calm, patient, and confident with pets of all temperaments.

Skilled in low-stress handling to keep pets safe and comfortable.

Attentive to signs of stress, anxiety, or health concerns in pets.

Prioritizes pet safety—never rushing a groom at the expense of the pet’s well-being.

3. Knowledge of Health & Hygiene

Recognizes skin issues, parasites, lumps, or injuries and communicates them to owners.

Maintains high standards of cleanliness and sanitization of tools, workspaces, and vehicles (for mobile groomers).

Understands basic first aid for pets in case of emergencies.

4. Customer Service & Communication

Listens carefully to pet owners’ requests and provides clear explanations of grooming options.

Builds trust with clients by being reliable, honest, and professional.

Educates pet parents on coat maintenance, brushing routines, and products.

5. Soft Skills & Professionalism

Patience and empathy—for both pets and their owners.

Attention to detail—ensuring the groom looks polished and neat.

Time management—able to balance quality with efficiency.

Teamwork—works well with assistants, bathers, or fellow groomers in a salon or mobile unit.

Passion for animals—genuinely enjoys working with pets and improving their comfort and appearance.

🌟 What Makes a Great Groomer 🌟

This is gentle reminder that being a truly great groomer or assistant isn’t just about clippers, scissors, or brushes—it’s about the heart and attitude you bring to our work every single day.

Here are the qualities that make someone stand out in our grooming family:

🐾 Kindness & Patience – Every pet has a unique personality. The calm, gentle way you handle them makes them feel safe and loved.

🐾 Team Spirit – Supporting each other, stepping in when someone needs a hand, and celebrating each other’s wins is what makes us stronger together.

🐾 Positive Attitude – A smile, encouragement, and bringing good energy into the workspace lifts the whole team and even helps our furry clients relax.

🐾 Attention to Detail – Noticing the little things, whether it’s a mat in the fur, a nervous tail wag, or a teammate needing help, shows pride in your work and care for others.

🐾 Reliability & Responsibility – Being dependable, on time, and ready to give your best effort builds trust—with pets, with clients, and with each other.

🐾 Love for Learning – Staying open to feedback, improving daily, and sharing knowledge helps us all grow and keeps our standard of care exceptional.

At the end of the day, our clients don’t just remember the haircut—they remember how we made their pets feel and how we made them feel. That’s the true difference between being a “good” groomer and a great one. 💖

Let’s keep lifting each other up, showing care in all we do, and making this a place where pets (and people) always feel valued.
