THE BOOK-SIDE MARKET IS HAPPENING TODAY!

Today, we open the pages of something bigger than just books. The Book-Side Market is about bringing people together through the love of reading, storytelling, creativity and community.

THE BOOK-SIDE MARKET: READING, REMEMBERING & STANDING IN SOLIDARITY

The Book-Side Market is more than a gathering around books. It is a space where stories are shared, voices are heard, communities connect and important conversations can begin.

As South Africa once again confronts the devastating reality of violence against women, we believe that silence cannot be the only response. The recent deaths of several women in and around Ekurhuleni have left families grieving and communities deeply concerned. While investigations are still underway and authorities have not confirmed that all the cases are connected, the circumstances have understandably raised fear and concern across the country.

At The Book-Side Market, we extend our deepest condolences to every family that has lost a mother, daughter, sister, friend, colleague or loved one to violence. Behind every headline is a human being whose life mattered, whose dreams mattered, and whose family will forever feel their absence.
Our theme of reading and community reminds us that books have always been more than words on pages. Literature gives us the opportunity to understand experiences different from our own, to question what we have accepted, to develop empathy and, importantly, to find the courage to speak about difficult issues.

South Africa's struggle with Gender-Based Violence and Femicide remains a serious national concern. Government reported that more than 50,000 GBVF cases were registered by SAPS during the first quarter of the 2026/27 financial year, demonstrating the scale of the challenge facing our communities.

This is why The Book-Side Market stands in solidarity.

When was the last time you picked up a book—not because you had to for school or work, but simply because you wanted to read?

In a world dominated by smartphones, social media, short videos and constant notifications, reading is increasingly competing for the attention of young people.

And this is why The Book-Side Market is about more than buying and selling books.

It is about bringing books back into our communities.

WHY DOES READING MATTER?

South Africa has made significant progress in literacy. The latest World Bank data, based on UNESCO statistics, records the country's adult literacy rate at approximately 91.15% in 2024 for people aged 15 and above.

That sounds encouraging—and it is.

But there is an important distinction we need to make:

Being able to read does not necessarily mean being a regular reader.

A young person can know how to read but rarely read a book.

They can spend hours reading social media posts but struggle to concentrate on a few pages of a novel.

They can consume hundreds of videos every week but never experience the imagination, knowledge and perspective that a good book can provide.

This is the challenge we need to address.

RETURNING TO THE PAGE- Tomorrow’s Session

Sometimes the hardest part of writing is not the words — it’s the courage to begin again.
Tomorrow, we return to the page. Not to be perfect. Not to impress. But to be honest.
This session is a gentle reminder that your voice does not need polishing before it is valid. You don’t have to sound “deep” or “clever.” You don’t have to have the right words. All that is required is that you show up — with what you feel, what you felt, and what still lingers in you.

Returning to the Page is about releasing pressure.
It’s about writing through silence, through doubt, through long pauses between sentences.
It’s about trusting that even the messy, unfinished lines belong.

Whether you’ve been writing consistently or you’ve been away from the page for a long time, this space is for you. Bring your reflections, your half-formed thoughts, your poems, your letters to self — everything counts.

We hope you are having a productive Day and looking forward to the week. We are back again with our Writing Prompts and looking forward to reading your submissions. If you won't be able to make it to our session, here is another way to be part of it.

Theme: Returning to the Page

Sometimes the hardest part of writing is coming back to it.
After silence. After life. After fear. After doubt.
This theme invites writers to return gently — without pressure, without perfection — and to meet the page where they are.

WRITING PROMPTS:

1. The Apology Letter
Write a letter of apology — to yourself, to your craft, to a story you abandoned, or to the page itself. This prompt explores guilt, distance, and the quiet desire to begin again.

2. Where I Left Off
Pick up from a moment, a memory, or an unfinished thought. This prompt invites reflection on pauses, interruptions, and the places where life forced the pen to stop.

3. A Story I Thought I Lost
This is about rediscovery. A voice, a truth, a version of yourself, or a story you believed had disappeared. Write it as something found again — altered, bruised, or reborn.

4. The Page Is Not Angry
A reminder that the blank page does not judge. This prompt encourages writers to release fear, self-criticism, and hesitation, and to write freely without apology or expectation.
