Melville Security Initiative

Melville Security Initiative This is the official page of the Melville Security Initiative. The Melville Security Initiative is managed by residents of Melville.

The Security Portfolio performs such a crucial role in the community that the current MRA committee agreed that this portfolio should be managed by the Melville Security Initiative since the two associations will continue to work closely together. Initially a project of the Melville Residents’ Association, the Melville Security Initiative was founded in 2009 with its primary goal of maintaining an

d implementing security solutions for the safety and security of the community and all who reside and operate businesses within its boundaries. They volunteer their time and expertise to maintain and improve security in the suburb. The initiative employs Beagle Watch to provide vehicle and foot patrols, armed response to residents who belong to the initiative, and manages requests for CCTV footage. Their mandate also includes supporting and collaborating with other suppliers, SAPS, SCF, and other bodies, to make our suburb safer.

🚧 Safe Streets Melville – Project Update 🚧
The MSI received an interim decision from the City of Johannesburg on the Safe Streets application at the end of December 2025. The proposal — developed with engineers, safety experts and residents — covered Auckland Park North & Richmond, representing over 1,250 households, businesses, schools and churches.

Community voting in 2023 showed strong support, with 70% in favour.

What the City approved:

✅ Gating of 19 roads (with set opening/closing times)
❌ Booming of 4 roads (not approved)

• While not everything was granted, this is a workable approval, and MSI will move forward while continuing to advocate for improvements where possible.

• We’re now in the public notice & objection phase, with notices published in the Northcliff Melville Times, the Government Gazette, and along affected streets.

Next up: Once this phase is complete, we’ll begin community wide planning around security, operations, finances and aesthetics as we move toward implementation. We are planning a street captains meeting on the 11th of April from 9:30am to 11.30am and further details around joining this and becoming a street captain will be sent soon, in the mean time please do book this into your calendars if you would like to be involved.

As always, please reach out to us as a project team on [email protected] with any questions.

Thank you to everyone who has made this project come to life and will continue to do so for our beloved Melville.

The MSI and Beagle Watch Armed Response are not only dedicated to prompt assistance when you need it most, but on the odd occasion we excel at being there to make sure community based events like the are safe for all to enjoy. With a team of 16 dedicated and well placed guards backed by a dedicated event vehicle and Danny Msi. The event was a success .

With up to 1 000 visitors in the area, Melville remained largely incident-free during New Year’s Eve.

As Melville switches to holiday mode, MSI’s Danny Nunes leans into a different rhythm: long hours, watchful nights, and a simple wish for a brightly lit, safe community.

The Melville Security Initiative and Beagle Watch Armed Response personal played a pivotal role in Thursday first The Melville Art Mile event. Some 200 confirmed attendees made their way from Richmond to 7th Street and onto main road stopping along the way at various venues. We are happy to report that security was did not receive or attend any matters on the night. A huge thanks to the staff at Beagle Watch and Danny Msi for their dedication on the evening.
