In this first instalment of a three-part investigative series that reveals some of the lesser-known facts about Cape Town’s development space, Daily Maverick reports on the political capture of the municipal planning tribunal, the official body that handles billions of rands per year in land-use applications. According to the national legislation, these tribunals are supposed to be independent. But the DA-led municipal council has passed a by-law that allows members to serve for life.

This saturday we get a chance to put a stop to illegal building in our suburb. Come and join our protest on the corner of corsair and pringle roads. We will be handing over a list of our demands to the deputy mayor.

If we dont stop this now, our suburb will degrade, and our properties will devalue.

The property that we are protesting outside is being turned into a 16 room boarding house with absolutely no council or plan approval.

This is one of many such developments in the greater Milnerton area.

We will have security and SAPS present for your safety.
