Spring 🌸 is here, and with it comes a season of blooming, renewal, remembrance, and new beginnings.
September is also Heritage Month in South Africa, so for our next Open Mic, we're inviting you to explore the things that make us who we are.
Choose one prompt from the list below, or let them inspire something entirely original.
Bring us your poetry. Your stories. Your memories. Your music. Your voice.
Let September be a celebration of where we come from, who we are, and everything we're becoming. 🌱💜

🌸 September: Spring & Heritage Prompts
1. “I Come From…”
Write a poem beginning with “I come from…” and explore the people, places, traditions, sounds, foods, languages, and memories that shaped you.
2. “There Are Generations Inside Me”
What are you carrying from those who came before you? What will you choose to pass forward—and what will end with you?
3. “What Does Home Mean?”
Home isn't always a place. Write about the person, smell, sound, tradition, meal, song, or memory that makes you feel that you belong somewhere.
4. “The Roots I Was Given”
Write about your roots and the branches you've chosen to grow. How can you honour where you come from while becoming someone entirely your own?
5. “What I Carry”
Choose something inherited from your heritage—a story, language, recipe, piece of clothing, belief, song, name, or tradition—and tell us the story it carries.
6. “Something in Me Is Blooming” 🌱
Spring is a season of renewal. Write about a part of yourself that is finally emerging after a long winter.
7. “What I Leave Behind”
Write about a pattern, belief, expectation, or pain you inherited but have decided not to carry into the next generation.
