Gauteng Traffic Police Chief Samuel Mashaba has been suspended with immediate effect.

This development is long overdue, given his flagrant disregard for the law and unprofessional conduct. Provincial authorities have finally taken action against Mashaba following his severely criticized performance at the Madlanga Commission, where he was accused of impropriety during a 2021 drug bust.

His actions, which included operating outside his jurisdiction, accepting money from an informant, and misleading a formal inquiry, warrant severe disciplinary action. His suspension is a step in the right direction, but further measures, including potential dismissal and legal action, are necessary to maintain public trust.

Traffic officials should enforce traffic laws, not engage in illicit activities.
