Toughest Fire Fighter Challenge

“A very humbling experience.”

That’s how our crew member, Ed Everton, describes taking on the Toughest Fire Fighter Challenge — a serious physical and mental test that is definitely more than simply pitching up and competing.

The challenge is made up of four consecutive stages, all completed in full structural firefighting gear and breathing apparatus, with each stage having a strict time limit.

🚒 Stage 1: Hoses
A 90 m hose drag, followed by making up two 25 m lengths of 65 mm hose correctly and placing them into boxes.

💪 Stage 2: Four obstacles
The Keiser Force Machine, moving a 70 kg weight over a set distance; navigating a tunnel; dragging an 80 kg dummy approximately 75–80 m; and scaling a 3 m wall using a rope.

🏃 Stage 3: Tower Run
Carrying a 20 L foam can up three flights of stairs, hoisting approximately 50 kg of hose over the top rail, and then carrying the foam can back down.

🔥 Stage 4: 600 m run
A 600 m run in full structural firefighting kit.

And there’s no leisurely recovery between them. The stages run consecutively, with just 10 minutes between each one.

For Ed, the biggest lesson was that preparation is everything.

“You definitely need to plan how you will execute your sections and pace yourself. You need to be physically fit — all-round fitness. Cardio endurance, explosive power and strength training are all required to complete the task ahead of you.”

This year’s preparation took around three to four months, training for approximately 40 minutes at a time — building the strength, endurance and fitness needed for the challenge.

A tough challenge, a valuable experience and one that Ed says he’ll be back for next year.

We’ll be cheering him on. 🔥

Toughest Firefighter Alive 2026 | Let’s go, Ed & Johan!

Two of our own are heading into the fire — quite literally.

Ed Everton and Johan Conradie are taking on this year’s Toughest Firefighter Alive Challenge, and we know they’re in for one seriously tough few days.

Strength, stamina, grit… and probably a few questionable life choices along the way.

Good luck, Ed & Johan! The whole Frontier Fire Assist crew will be behind you, cheering you on all the way.

Go give it horns, boys! 💪🔥

84 little firefighters. One seriously fun challenge!

Our Makhanda and Port Alfred crews alongside LifeFirst Response joined forces at the Victoria Primary Fun Fair, where 84 kiddos tackled our Little Firefighters Challenge.

There were tyres to pull, flip and slam, obstacles to conquer, hoses to drag, water to spray and even a “patient”, named Sophie, to rescue!

Every rand raised through the challenge was donated back to the school, making an already fantastic day even more worthwhile.

We thoroughly enjoyed every enthusiastic little firefighter—and we’re fairly certain there were some very good naps afterwards!

Thank you, Victoria Primary, for having us.

Teamwork in action.

On 1 September, our FFA Makhanda crew responded to a heavy-duty crane truck fire alongside the local Fire Department, municipal services and Traffic officials.

Two attack lines were deployed, with water relayed through BF1 from BG18 and the RU tanker, which was manned by our team. Two SCBA sets were also used during the operation.

Through a coordinated effort between the services on scene, the fire was brought under control and damping down was completed. Crews began making up at 14:00.

Most importantly, no injuries were reported.

Thank you to everyone who worked together on scene to bring the incident under control and ensure a safe response.

Train together. Respond together.

Earlier this September, our Port Alfred crew joined our local Fire Department for a fast-paced evening of SCBA drills, hose drills and team exercises.

Collaborative training like this is incredibly important. When the Fire Department puts out the call for assistance, they know the crew responding alongside them, because we have trained, worked and built trust together.

Thank you to our local Fire Department for always welcoming our volunteers and sharing your time and experience. Strong teams are built before the call comes!

Happy, tired and soaked through!

How do you get the whole training crew into one photo? Take two!!

Some of our Port Alfred volunteers joined the Makhanda crew for a live building fire drill last night to keep their skills sharp. As it turns out, that training didn’t go to waste.

At 4am this morning, a building in Makhanda unfortunately caught fire, and our Makhanda crew responded swiftly, remaining on scene until first light.

Well done to both teams! Thank you for your commitment, your teamwork and your willingness to serve our communities, whenever the call comes.

The strong winds our crews battled against while fighting today’s fire — thankfully the blaze has been extinguished, but the wind is still gusting hard across Makhanda tonight.

Conditions like these are exactly why vegetation fires can become dangerous so quickly.

Frontier Fire Assist | Fire Response – 11 May 2026

Just before midday today our Makhanda crew responded to a fast-moving vegetation fire on the outskirts of Makhanda. Extremely windy conditions created dangerous and challenging circumstances, with nearby homes and structures quickly becoming the main priority while crews worked to contain the fire line before conditions worsened further.

Additional Makhanda crew members later joined the operation alongside our Port Alfred crew, with teams working together well into the evening to battle the blaze.

After several hours on scene, the fire was successfully brought under control and extinguished.

Incidents like these are a reminder of just how quickly conditions can change when strong winds are involved, and how important coordinated teamwork and rapid response are in protecting both property and surrounding areas.

We are incredibly grateful to every crew member who responded and assisted under difficult conditions. Thankfully, all crews returned safely with no injuries reported.

Frontier Fire Assist Port Alfred | Search & Rescue

This morning our team responded to a different kind of call — assisting in the search for an individual following a structural fire.

Calls like these are always deeply difficult for our crews. They are moments filled with urgency, uncertainty, and hope for a positive outcome.

Sadly, this was not the outcome anyone had hoped for. The matter was handed over to SAPS.

Our sincere condolences are with the family, loved ones, and all those affected during this heartbreaking time.
