♟️📣 There’s more to D&D in 2027 than just the league!

🏆COMING IN FEBRUARY 2027: OUR FIRST CHESS ARBITERS COURSE!

This is just a small taste of what lies ahead. We're looking at new ways to grow D&D, bring our chess community closer together and help more people get involved.

We already have our designated tournament group, and now we’re adding something new: the D&D Chess Learning Hub!🎉

💡 SO, WHAT’S THE LEARNING HUB ALL ABOUT?

♟️ Stay in the loop – Get updates about upcoming D&D events and activities.

📚 Make sense of chess – Helpful articles explaining ratings, tie-breaks, tournament pairings and more. Ever wondered why two players with the same points can finish in different positions? We’ll help explain!

💡 Learn the ins and outs – Useful information about chess rules, tournaments and all those things that are good to know when you’re involved in school chess.

and of course, the reason we are so excited...

🎓 Development and training opportunities – We want to create more opportunities for our community to learn and develop. Such as the incredibly Arbiters course we have the pleasure of hosting in 2027 led by the amazing Gunther van Den Bergh

Best of all? You don’t need to be a chess player to benefit!

You’ll learn how tournaments work, how players are paired, how tie-breaks are calculated and how the rules are applied to keep things fair. It’s useful knowledge for teachers, coaches, parents, school organisers and anyone who helps make chess happen.

👀 We’ll be sharing more about the course soon, so make sure you’re in the group to stay in the loop!

📲 HAVEN’T JOINED THE LEARNING HUB YET?

Come and join us here:

We’re building D&D together, and there’s plenty more to come in 2027. Join the group, keep up with what’s happening and be part of the conversation!

♟️🏆 Last night marked a new milestone for D&D — the 2026 High School Chess League prize-giving!

13 schools. 12 weeks. And a whole lot of chess.

Friday after Friday, our players showed up, sat down and battled it out. And now, finally, it was time to hand out the hardware! 👏

Congratulations to our top five schools:

🥇 Northwood Boys High School — 105 points

🥈 George Campbell High School — 92½ points

🥉 Westville Boys High School — 89½ points

4️⃣ Durban Boys High School — 86 points

5️⃣ Glenwood Boys High School — 79½ points

The prize-giving was generously hosted by Durban High School. A special thank you to Headmaster Mr A. D. Pinheiro for making the time to present the trophies and medals.

Third and second place received medals, while the winners, Northwood, took home their own trophies and, of course, the pride of the league…

🏆 The D&D Floating Trophy.

An icon of D&D, this trophy has been doing the rounds for 26 years. We hope it enjoys its top-shelf space at Northwood for a while — until the time comes to pass the flame to the next champion.

A massive thank you to DHS for their support and for hosting our very first prize-giving. It was a fitting place to celebrate the end of our first league season.

And a very special shout-out to DHS MIC Mrs Nagiah. Her incredible organisation, commitment and dedication to the chess league have helped keep things moving throughout the year. ♟️👏

While it may be time to pack the boards away, we’re already looking forward to 2027 — with our current champions, Northwood, hosting our League Championship next year.

Thank you for stepping up and stepping in to help grow and sustain school chess. We love seeing our community getting behind the league.

And to the Class of 2026 — your final moves of the school year are almost here. ♟️

Good luck with your final exams! Trust your preparation, take your time, and remember: just like in chess, sometimes the best move is simply to stop, think and make your move with confidence. 🧠♟️

The boards may be packed away for now, but we'll be back in 2027.

And the question is… who's coming for that floating trophy? 👀🏆♟️

♟️ KEEP PLAYING, KEEP GROWING! ♟️

At D&D, our heart remains firmly rooted in school chess—helping to grow and uplift the game within our schools and creating opportunities for more learners to participate, compete and discover a love for chess.

But we also know that, for many young players, the final school bell does not mean they are ready to stop playing! With this in mind, we have compiled a list of chess clubs operating in and around our area.

We are sharing the list as a helpful community resource. Parents and players are welcome to contact the clubs directly to find out more about membership, coaching, meeting times and fees.

School chess may be where many journeys begin, but we are delighted to see that love for the game continue growing wherever our players find a chessboard. 🏫♟️🌟

♟️ Whilst 200 players were making history on the boards, there was another team making the magic happen behind the board.

The people capturing the scores.
The ones walking the floor, checking in on games and players.
The photographer chasing those perfect moments. 📸
The team guiding players through the day, answering questions, solving problems and keeping everyone on track.
The people moving pieces, carrying things, checking details and stepping in wherever they were needed.

Tournaments like this don't just happen. It takes a team of people who care enough to give their time, their energy and their hearts to making it possible — so that the players can simply arrive, sit down, play their best chess and enjoy being part of something special. ❤️

So this post is for the people behind the scenes.

Thank you. 🙌

♟️ 200 personalities. One heartbeat.

One by one, they stepped up to the D&D banner.

A smile here.
A serious stare there.
A little mischief.
A little nerves.
Confidence. Curiosity. Determination. Character.

Every face different. Every player unique.

We would have loved to give you 240 individual portraits, because every single one tells a story. But instead, we’ve tried to capture something bigger.

The whole machine.

Each player is a moving part — different in shape, different in energy, different in character — but when they come together, something remarkable happens.

They become D&D Schools Chess.️

A community.
A collection of characters.
A shared passion.
One heartbeat.

Check out our Reel and soak up the energy, personality and spirit that make us uniquely D&D! ♟️

Give a ❤️ to the players who brought the character to the day!

♟️ 29 SCHOOLS. ONE CHESS COMMUNITY. ♟️

With more than 200 players from 29 schools filling the Ken Mackenzie Hall at Clifton School, Saturday was busy from the very first move—and it stayed that way right through all seven rounds!

Somewhere between finding seats, checking pairings, playing chess and keeping the tournament moving, we managed to catch a few of our players proudly representing their schools in front of the D&D banner. 📸

We would have loved to have photographed every school, but on a day of this size, the camera simply couldn’t keep up with all the action!

Thank you one and all for showing up, flying your school flag with pride and filling the hall with such fantastic chess energy. ♟️ And if we missed you, share your picture in the comments sections, lets fly the D&D Banner with pride😍

♟️ APPRECIATION POST ♟️

Yesterday, more than 200 players filed into the beautiful Ken Mackenzie Hall at Clifton for the much-anticipated 2026 D&D Senior Primary Open—and what a wonderful sight it was!

It was a fantastic day filled with serious concentration, tense finishes, very proud moments, valuable lessons for our newcomers and, all around the hall, a shared appreciation for the game we love. School chess is vibrant and growing, and we are thrilled to be part of it!

This appreciation post must begin with our incredible hosts, Clifton School. From the warm welcome and beautiful venue to the delicious lunches sponsored for our accompanying teachers and tournament team, they went above and beyond to ensure that everyone was comfortable and well looked after.

A tremendous amount of work also took place behind the scenes to prepare the hall, accommodate such a large turnout and make sure the D&D team had everything needed to keep the tournament running. We truly could not have asked for better hosts.

We are also incredibly grateful to our sponsors, who added so much to the day— thank you North Coast Chess Club and Sugar Bay Holiday Resort - from the tablecloths that completed our tournament setup to Sugar Bay’s generous sponsorship of two day-camp giveaways and additional lucky-draw prizes.

Congratulations to Clifton and Manor Gardens Primary School, the lucky recipients of the Sugar Bay camp giveaways! 🎉

Congratulations, too, to every player who took part, all our prize winners, and the teachers, parents, officials and volunteers who supported the children throughout a long day of chess.

This is just our first look back at an unforgettable day. We have plenty more photographs, highlights and special moments still to share! 📸🏆
