CELEBRATING THE CENTENARY OF AFRIKAANS IN THE NORTHERN CAPE

On 6 June 2025, the Northern Cape Heritage Pioneers, in collaboration with the Centre for Creative Writing and African Languages at Sol Plaatje University and the ATKV-tak Taal Trek, brought the Afrikaans Amptelik 100 centenary festivities to the Northern Cape.
The event brought together a vibrant and diverse audience, including SPU staff and students, as well as teachers and learners from eight schools across Kimberley, Platfontein, and Barkley West. Community members from the Kimberley area, such as Roodepan, Homevale, and Beaconsfield also showed strong support, adding to the inclusive spirit of the day. Among the distinguished guests were four members of the Afrikaans Official 100 Review Committee, including the esteemed Afrikaans writer and speaker, Heinrich Wyngaard.
The programme was filled with thought-provoking conversations about Afrikaans of the Northern Cape, including Griqua and Namaqua Afrikaans. Poetry served as a powerful and expressive element throughout the day, most notably from the award-winning poet Lynthia Julius and Julande Strauss - a community member who surprised the audience with remarkable evocative and deeply moving unpublished Afrikaans poetry. The event was closed by the Acting Vice-Chancellor of SPU, Prof Debra Meyer, who reaffirmed her commitment to growing indigenous languages, such as Afrikaans at the university.
