Kenton-on-Sea, the jewel of the Sunshine coast, a small town with a big heart; the barefoot capital of South Africa, home to Shelly Bay, one of South Africa’s secret beaches, and to Thandi, Kariega Game Reserve's poaching survivor, the poster girl who has inspired thousands across the globe to step up our conservation efforts and campaign to help save the species. Collaboration: Rooting4Rhino =
Sunshine Coast Tourism + Nevertoforgetjourney + Chipembere Rhino Foundation. Our aim is to raise R90,000 over the next 18 months, representing the 9,000 rhino lost to poaching over the past 10 years including Chippy, Isipho and Geza. To mark the 10 year anniversary of these rhinos deaths, that led to the founding of Chipembere Rhino Foundation, we are planning a number of events to help us reach our target that will be earmarked for Chipembere Rhino Foundation's projects on the ground, where it counts. Your route for our rhino: Rooting4RhinoVirtual RUN can be either walked or run (our rhinos don’t mind!) wherever you are in the world. Run, jog or walk on the road, beach or trail… you choose your pace – it’s your own race – for our rhino! Our Aim:
• Raise much needed funds for rhino protection
Our Beneficiaries:
• Chipembere Rhino Foundation
Our Events:
• Rooting4Rhino Virtual Rhino Run 22 September - 16 November 2020

Our Inspiration:
3 Rhinos were poached at the Kariega Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape, South Africa in March 2012. Tragically one male Rhino (No 84) was fatally injured and died during the course of the night, but two Rhinos, a male and a female survived the ordeal against all odds, and despite their horns being brutally hacked with panga's from their faces. The assistance of Veterinary surgeon Dr William Fowlds, known for his compassion and expertise in Rhino care, was called in to treat Themba & Thandi. Themba’s story, the young bull, was heart-wrenching and his courage, will to live and daily fight to survive the pain of his ordeal was shared to the world by Dr Fowlds. In his grief, Dr Fowlds publically made a promise to this brave boy that his death would not be in vain. His story would be shared to encourage people all over the world to take a stand against this atrocity. The cow, Thandi, progressed at a much faster pace, defying all odds, is alive and well. She remains our beacon of HOPE. What started one dark night in the Eastern Cape, has since rippled amazingly across the globe, with people willing these two brave souls to survive. Their story continues to pull people from various disciplines together to make resources and knowledge available, and in the process, given a glimmer of hope to our Rhino population. We responded to Dr Fowlds by joining forces with the Port Alfred Rotary Club’s Early Act Club who accepted our challenge to get involved. Our Belief:
We believe that our rhino should live freely in their known habitat forever. Whilst the rhino poaching surge continues to escalate, we need to all assist in protecting them. At the current poaching rate, we are near tipping scales – we do not have much time left before our rhino become EXTINCT!!!
