TELLING IT AS IT IS
JASON HAYMAN
Founder and Director (Operational)
Chocolate’s Angels, a NO KILL rescue has existed for 7 years. If I had known then what I know now, I would never have gone down this road. Don’t understand me wrong, I still have immense passion for every single animal, especially those in need. I also have passion for animal owners who love their pets and look after them the way they should. I work in a communities where the good, the bad and the ugly go hand in hand. I have seen neglect and abuse that has brought me to tears. I have enclosed yards at no cost to the owner, just to let the dog live without a chain around the neck. The response of a dog to be able to run freely in the yard after being tied to a chain since a pup, is something to experience. All the sterilization drives, vaccinations, deworming’s, first aid and vet visits, all at no charge to the community is only a small part of Chocolate’s Angels Animal rescue.
To do all of the above costs money, money that comes from public donations. Many rescue organizations receive monthly funding from trusts or corporate donors. Most small rescues like us do not have that luxury. We solely survive on public support. Over the last 3 years that support has been dwindling, and has now reached an all time low. Chocolate’s Angels uses 1.2tons of dogfood and 300kg of cat food per month. There is rent, electricity, water, cellphone costs, Vaccines, Deworming and other medicines , staff salaries, transport costs (we do not own a vehicle), maintenance materials and the list goes on. The average expense comes to R60,000 per month.
I have already closed our doors to new intakes. There has always been a good understanding between us and other rescues. We will take on animals from other rescues and vice versa. Now we have to say no to everyone. The animal/s involved now face an uncertain future. What will become of that innocent life? So many dogs and cats face euthanasia, animals who did nothing wrong, except for not having a place in society. We don’t have animals put to sleep unless through medical reasons.
Running a rescue center is a daily struggle for survival. We have applied for our PBO registration which will allow us to approach corporations etc for funding. This certificate will allow donors to claim tax relieve on donations to non profit organizations as ourselves. Untill then I honestly don’t know how long we will be able to keep this up.
For the critics and finger pointers out there that think that we are just here to enrich ourselves financially. I invite you to come and see for yourself what Chocolate’s is all about. Our books are open for inspection at any time.
