A question for everyone who follows this page: If cleaner air is worth having, is it worth contributing towards?

Our security intervention proved that action works. Illegal dumping and burning were disrupted. Air quality improved. 🔥⛔

The challenge now isn't proving the solution. It's funding it.

Many people support the cause. Far fewer contribute to keeping it going.

If you've been waiting for someone else to solve this problem, this is your reminder that community action is what got us this far.

Become a clean air sponsor. 🩵

Every contribution helps prevent illegal dumping and burning operations. Together, we can keep Kya Sand breathing again. Find out how in the link below.

ICYMI 🔥
“How Government Negligence Fuels An Illegal Waste Industry At The Expense Of Public Health” - A headline that sadly reflects the reality many communities face every day.

When accountability is missing and enforcement fails, illegal dumping flourishes while residents are left to deal with the health, environmental and social consequences.

For communities like Kya Sands, this conversation matters.

🚨 When governance fails, illegal waste systems thrive

South Africa’s growing illegal waste economy is not just an environmental issue - it’s a public health crisis driven by systemic failures.

In this expert insight, Duncan Nortier unpacks how gaps in enforcement, infrastructure, and service delivery are enabling an underground waste industry to flourish - often at the expense of vulnerable communities.

With millions of tonnes of waste going uncollected and improperly managed each year, illegal dumping continues to contaminate water sources, air quality, and living environments.

The result? Increased exposure to disease, rising clean-up costs, and long-term environmental damage.

Addressing this challenge requires more than reactive clean-ups - it demands accountability, investment in waste infrastructure, and co-ordinated governance.

🍴 TONIGHT’S MENU: The Kya Sand "24/7 Toxic Smoke Buffet" 🍴
Special Invite to our VIPs: Ewan Botha, City of Joburg, Gauteng Department of Environment , and Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment.

Since you’re taking your time to act, we assume you’re just waiting for an invite to sample the local "delicacies." Don't worry, we serve this 365 days a year, 24 hours a day!

Tonight’s selection, fresh from the illegal dumps of the day:

🔥 The Signature Dish: A thick, velvety reduction of PM2.5 at 204 µg/m³. It’s rated "POOR" by the experts, but we call it "The Bloubosrand Lung-Coater".

💀 The Palate Cleanser: A chemical zest of VOCs at a 441 index. Why breathe oxygen when you can breathe industrial-grade runoff?

🤢 The Side Order: A generous portion of PM1.0 (192.5) and PM4.0 (203.7) soot, perfect for that "crunchy" feeling in the back of your throat.

No need to bring the braai, the illegal waste piles are already providing a steady, toxic glow! 🪵🔥

We’re sick and tired of being the "sacrifice zone" for Johannesburg's waste. While you sleep with your windows shut in the suburbs, we’re choking on your lack of urgency.

Come join us for a breath of "fresh" air. We promise it’ll be unforgettable... mostly because of the permanent respiratory damage.

Residents! Is this affecting you? Please SHARE this to your own wall and local community groups! We need to make these numbers (PM2.5: 204) visible to the whole city. Tag the officials in the comments so they can’t hide!"🗣️✊

For nearly a decade, the City of Joburg has known that its landfill space was running out, and despite warnings as far back as 2018, they have chosen inertia over action. As this BusinessTech article highlights, we are officially staring down a "Day Zero" for waste.

And what we’re seeing in Kya Sands – illegal dumping and frequent fires – is a direct consequence of a system under pressure. When landfill space runs out, waste doesn’t stop. It spills over – into communities and our lungs.

♻️ Yes, residents and businesses need to reduce and recycle more.

But this scale of crisis points to something bigger: the need for long-term, joined-up planning that matches the growth of the city. Because waste management isn’t optional infrastructure, it’s fundamental.

The question now isn’t whether this was predictable. It was.

The question is: what gets fixed, and how quickly?

Johannesburg is seeing uncollected garbage piling across the streets amid protests and labour disputes.
